There are many setters that we have not written about yet and it is time to give them some exposure. In this article, I am once again spreading myself around the state and not focusing only on one city. Instead, I chose to pick one setter from each grad class that we haven’t written about yet and highlight them. Check out the following players as they have turned my head. Hopefully they will turn yours also.
Clara Brower Clara Brower 5'9" | S The Woodlands | 2021 State TX [2021] 5-9 Setter (HS: The Woodlands/Club: Woodlands Revolution/ Verbal: Georgia)
Miss Brewer comes in ranked 24th overall on our Prep Dig Rankings for the 2021 class. Clara is a setter who has amazing upper body control whether in system or out of system. She is extremely fast on her feet and doesn’t waste extra steps getting to the ball. We as coaches call that negative footwork. She doesn’t have a lot of negative footwork when pursuing the pass. This is what keeps her balanced at the point of contact and helps her to be pinpoint accurate. She excels in jump-setting every attack along the net and is able to move the ball around quite nicely against the flow of the pass which keeps the opponent off-balance. She is committed to Georgia and will do well for them as they play in the tough SEC conference. We expect great things from Clara in her senior season at volleyball powerhouse the Woodlands high school.
Katherine Crosley [2022] 5-9 Setter (HS: Bowie/Club: Austin Juniors/Verbal: Davidson)
Katherine is currently unranked on our Prep Dig Rankings for the 2022 class, but that will change when I update the rankings this month. She is verbally committed to Davidson and will be a star for them. Since bursting onto the scene as a freshman on Varsity last year and earning Newcomer of the Year honors, she hasn’t stopped getting better. The Austin Juniors phenom setter has turned heads ever since. She is a silky smooth left-handed setter who also excels in the classroom and earned academic all district last year as well. She has the length in her extremities to be a 5-1 setter at the collegiate level. She has such soft hands that help the ball just float off of her hands so smoothly. She moves the ball all around the net with ease. It is very nice to see a young setter grow into her frame and become so elegant with her movements. Oh did I mention she can bang also. She was also named her district offensive MVP last year as well. This young lady just keeps getting better each year and I think she is going to be a super stud over the next few years. I can’t wait to see what she does next.
Tanon Rosenthal Tanon Rosenthal 5'10" | S Westlake | 2023 State CA [2023] 5-10 Setter (HS: Westlake/Club: Roots/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Tanon comes in ranked 42nd overall on our Prep Dig Rankings for the 2023 class. Tannon is a star in the making. I will bet my entire salary that this young lady will be a Division 1 stud once it’s all said and done. She was only a freshman this past year, but this kid is going to be the real deal. She can hit, set, and has the frame at a young age to excel at the game at a very high level. I watch the ball come out of her hands as a setter and I see an absolute star. Her release on the backset is poetry in motion. Now let’s talk about her attacking. At such a young age, she is able to move the ball around and score in a variety of ways. For Roots, she hits out of both pins occasionally just to showcase her versatility. Her big hands allow her contact to control the ball so well. She has the power necessary to score many more points in the years to come. I am going to keep my eyes on this one very closely.
There are many more amazing setters to be aware of. Stay tuned for more articles on your favorite athletes.
