The 2020 season of the Class 1A in Washington state should have top-level competition from start to finish and these five teams might be one step ahead of the other as they have some of the best setters in the division.
Abby Cummins – Senior – King’s Way Christian
Cummins has been a pivotal piece for King’s Way Christian since she joined the team as she registered at least 400 assists in each of her three seasons. Her 587 assists in 2018 were the most in the entire class and she repeated the great performance last season, when the 5’8” setter dished out 504 assists, the third-best mark in the state, and was named to the All-State Second Team after leading the Knights to a seventh-place finish at the State Championship.
Ella Moore – Senior – Elma
After playing in just two sets in her freshman year with Elma in 2017, Moore has substantially improved her role with the team in the last two seasons. As the Eagles’ main setter, the 5’11” player ranked in the top-7 of the class in setting in the last two seasons, tallying 431 assists in 2018 (good for third) and 382 last season (which played her in seventh). Despite the drop in her total assists, her assists per set average improved significantly, jumping from 6.8 and 8.3 and that progress earned her an honorable mention to the All-State Team.
Kate Piasecki – Junior – Charles Wright
The Class 1A assists leader in 2019, Piasecki earned an honorable mention to the All-State Team after setting her Charles Wright teammates up to score impressive 653 times last season. She was instrumental in both wins the Tarriers had in the State Championship, amassing 29 assists against Lynden Christian and a season-high 44 against Zillah. Her stats had a massive lead when compared to her freshman year, when she registered just 113 assists, indicating there could be more to come in 2020.
Hailey Ro – Junior – Bellevue Christian
Ro’s efforts were one of the high points of Bellevue Christian’s State Championship appearance last season. The then-sophomore setter took a leading role with the team and ranked fifth in the entire class in assists with 430, averaging 6.4 per set. At 5’3”, Ro wasn’t much of a factor at the net, but she compensated it with smart and efficient ball distribution and developed interesting chemistry with the Vikings’ leading scorer, junior outside hitter Cora ter Kuile.
Rachel Gallagher – Junior – Goldendale
Gallagher was a key figure in a Goldendale team that finished eighth at the State Championship last year. The sophomore took charge of the task of leading the team’s offense and was rewarded with an honorable mention to the All-State Team. She also helped fellow Timberwolves middle-blocker Alyssa Weis to appear in the All-State Second team. At 5’10”, Gallagher can make her presence be felt at the net, but is also well-versed on defense.
