These athletes had an impact from the moment they walked into the gym until the very last minute of play. Their energy on the court was awesome and they gave their all for every single ball that came their way.
Here are some of the athletes from the classes of 2023 and 2024 I cannot stop thinking about.
Lily Wagner Lily Wagner 5'11" | OH Germantown | 2023 State #118 Nation WI – Class of 2023 – Outside Hitter – Germantown
When Lily got a ball, she attacked it. There were no nice swings coming from Lily last week. She took an aggressive and momentum building approach every time she got a ball, no matter how good the set was. She also showed her talent on defense and serve receive throughout the day.
Lily Wagner Lily Wagner 5'11" | OH Germantown | 2023 State #118 Nation WI – Class of 2024 – Setter – Oconomowoc
Setters and athletes like Lily don’t come around very often. She sets beyond her years and is incredibly smart with the ball. Lily jump sets nearly every ball and moves the ball quickly. She can set pin to pin from nearly anywhere on the court, has an aggressive serve, and plays solid defense as well.
Kindyl Kilar Kindyl Kilar 5'10" | OH Whitewater | 2023 State WI – Class of 2023 – Right Side – Whitewater
Kindyl is the type of athlete you can really never take off the court. She is just too valuable. She is great at passing, has an incredible swing, and is an energizer on the court. The way she balances power and control is definitely a tough aspect of volleyball to master, but she manages it in a near-perfect manner.
Kyla Dunaway Kyla Dunaway 6'4" | RS Kimberly | 2023 State WI – Class of 2023 – Middle Hitter – Kimberly
At 6’3” Kyla is a beast at the net. But it isn’t her height that makes her such an amazing player, though that does help. What makes her indispensable is her ability to play well anywhere on the court. She can 10’ a ball across the net and is a solid passer as well. Kyla’s blocking stops even the best outside hitters in her class and above.
Grace Grocholski Grace Grocholski 5'10" | OH Kettle Moraine | 2023 State WI – Class of 2023 – Outside Hitter – Kettle Moraine
Grace has an explosive approach and uses it to pound balls. She was essential to Kettle Moraine’s success last year as a freshman and continues to grow. At the Prep Dig Summer Showcase, she showed why coaches keep her on the court. She makes big plays at essential moments and rarely misses a hit.
Karissa Fortune Karissa Fortune 6'2" | OH Appleton North | 2023 State WI – Class of 2023 – Outside Hitter – Appleton North
Karissa is one of the best 6-rotation outsides in the state. She rarely makes mistakes, is aggressive on offense and defense, and is an energizer on the court. Karissa has a huge approach that allows her to hit over a lot of blockers and be a threat to every opponent that comes her way.
Kennedy Martin – Class of 2023 – Outside Hitter – De Pere
Kennedy is a nearly unstoppable volleyball player. She is 6’5” of pure athletic ability. She has good ball control, is aggressive on offense, and puts up a nearly impenetrable block. On top of that, she works well with the athletes around her. Kennedy is an athlete to watch in the coming years.
Alexandra Kreutzmann – Class of 2023 – Setter – Sussex-Hamilton
Alexandra is one of my new favorite setters in the class of 2023. She moves the ball around with ease and has a lot of speed and power behind her sets. She has great hands and betters the ball nearly every time it comes over the net. Alexandra is also a great all-around athlete who is solid on defense and has an aggressive serve as well.
Claire Luoma – Class of 2024 – Libero – Franklin
Claire is a force to be reckoned with in the back row. Her speed and ability to read the ball frustrate hitters and will continue to do so as long as Claire continues to grow and play. She seems to get a hand on every ball that comes over the net and is an indispensable libero to any team.
These athletes were constantly making big plays at the Prep Dig Summer Showcase last week. They will all be instrumental to their high school and club teams in the coming years and will likely be some of the top names in the state as they continue to grow and learn.
