Despite that minor setback, these athletes showed up and played incredible at the Prep Dig Summer Showcase. Seeing them play makes me so excited for the upcoming high school and club seasons.
Here are some breakout setters who impressed during the Prep Dig Summer Showcase.
Emerson Van Lannen – Appleton North – Class of 2024
Emerson is smart and aggressive. Her incredibly aggressive and precise serve originally caught my eye during warmups at the showcase; however, throughout the day she showed time and time again, she is a force to be reckoned with in the setter position.
Alexandra Kreutzmann – Sussex-Hamilton – Class of 2023
Alexandra was one of the first setters to catch my eye. She is confident, has great hands, and can push the ball pin to pin from nearly anywhere on the court. She adjusted well to different hitters and was very competitive on the court. Every time she touched the ball she was able to better it, no matter how tough the pass was.
Ella Safar – Burlington – Class of 2024
Ella has near-perfect hands. She is the type of athlete who will grow and develop in leaps and bounds over the next few years. Her sets are precise and where they need to be. It was fun to watch her adjust her sets to different hitters and compete at such a high level on Friday.
Lexi Bugajski Lexi Bugajski 6'0" | S New Berlin Eisenhower | 2023 State WI – New Berlin Eisenhower – Class of 2023
Lexi stands at 6’ tall which makes her a threat to opponents all the way around. Her setting stood out on Friday. She has awesome movement to the ball and gets their quickly. She also places the ball very well across the net.
Sophia Schneider Sophia Schneider 5'10" | S Waterloo | 2023 State WI – Waterloo – Class of 2023
Sophia is one of the grittiest athletes I have ever seen. She will make a play every single time she touches the ball. She never hesitates, is great on defense, and can swing as well. She is an all-around great athlete who excels as a setter and is a great leader on the court.
Rachel Koss Rachel Koss 5'11" | S Freedom | 2023 State WI – Freedom – Class of 2023
Rachel is the kind of setter who rarely makes a mistake. She thinks through her options quickly and efficiently and nearly always makes a beneficial choice for her team. She has great hands and leads by example on any team she plays on.
Lily Wagner Lily Wagner 5'11" | OH Germantown | 2023 State #118 Nation WI – Oconomowoc – Class of 2024
Lily is easily one of the top athletes in her class. She plays beyond her years and is better than many upperclassmen. Lily is competitive, consistent, and continuously improves. She has a calm and confident demeanor on the court and is a truly amazing setter.
These setters came to compete on Friday, and it showed. Each of these setters is unique but one thing they all have in common is they are all going to become nearly unstoppable setters and athletes in the next year or two.
