After reaching the regional semifinals one year earlier, Powell County finished as the 14th Region runner-up in 2019. The Pirates exited the 2019 high school volleyball season with a 26-9 record. Powell County compiled the best record among 14th Region volleyball teams in 2019. The Pirates blanked longtime rival Lee County 3-0 to win the 56th District championship and knocked off both Wolfe County and Leslie County prior to falling to Breathitt County in the 14th Region title match.
Here are three Powell County juniors to watch.
Joanna Centers: A middle blocker, Centers was among the leaders for 14th Region runner-up Powell County in 2019. Centers appeared in each of Powell County’s 35 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season, recording 168 kills and 169 blocks. Strong at the net, Centers established herself as a go-to hitter in addition to being a consistent blocker. Centers blocks well individually and with teammates. The Powell County middle blocker uses quick attacks on offense regularly.
Hannah Crabtree: On the floor for 21 of Powell County’s 35 matches in 2019, Crabtree took advantage of her minutes and the opportunities that came with them. In 21 matches as a sophomore, Crabtree logged 96 assists and 31 digs. Crabtree has shown the ability to play in both the back row and front row. Strong defensively, Crabtree is an accurate passer as well.
Trinity Ritchie: Another defensive specialist, Ritchie appeared in 26 of Powell County’s 35 matches during the 2019 high school volleyball season. In only 49 sets during the 2019 prep volleyball season, Ritchie registered 175 digs and 14 service aces. Ritchie is a solid back row hitter who digs and pursues well. Following the loss of multiple teammates to graduation, Ritchie is poised to take on a larger role for the Pirates.
