2023 Rankings: Breaking down 11-20
Our first Class of 2023 rankings came out last week, giving volleyball fans around the state something to dissect.
We took a look at the top 10 earlier this week. Now, we look at the players making up 11-20. There are some names you will definitely need to know.
11. Lauren Heming Lauren Heming 5'6" | DS/L Marian | 2023 State MI , L/DS Marian/Team Detroit
Heming got a chance to see a lot of time on the court as a freshman and is now a confident sophomore playing on a young, but very talented, Marian squad. Heming feeds off the energy of her teammates and is able to make the tough digs. She also has an improving serve to compliment her passing game.
12. Remi Madison Remi Madison 5'9" | OH Grand Blanc | 2023 State MI , OH Grand Blanc/Michigan Elite
Madison is already rolling in her 2020 season. After getting some prime opportunities to contribute as a freshman, Madison is coming into her own for this fall. She is an explosive player that can really deliver a powerful swing. Her all-around game is getting better with each match as well. She has all the skills to be a dominant six-rotation player.
13. Aubreigh Oswald Aubreigh Oswald 6'2" | MB Lowell | 2023 State MI , MH Lowell/FaR Out
Oswald came on later in 2019, getting a chance to help the Red Arrows make a run to the D1 championship match. She has the length and athleticism to be a top-level middle going forward. The Red Arrows will need her contributions this year to have another deep postseason run. It’s a very high ceiling for Oswald.
14. Neele’ge Sims, MH Corunna/Michigan Elite
Sims made the most of her opportunities as a freshman and now the Cavs are putting a lot more trust in her for 2020. She’s hitting .300 in the early stages of the season and has been doing a little bit of everything for Corunna this year. That includes some setting. Look for Sims to really have a breakout year on the prep scene.
15. Sarah Dunn Sarah Dunn 5'10" | OH Forest Hills Central | 2023 State MI , OH Forest Hills Central/FaR Out
Dunn is just a gamer. She plays with a lot of competitive fire, but also knows when to look past a bad point. Her game improves with each match and she’s turning into a very reliable outside for FHC. Playing in a talent-heavy area, Dunn is proving she can compete with anyone.
16. Paige Giehtbrock Paige Giehtbrock 6'0" | OH Clarkston | 2023 State MI , OH Clarkston/Legacy
Giehtbrock saw limited time with Clarkston’s varsity in 2019, as the Wolves had some experienced hitters to rely on. The 2020 season could see more of her in action. Early matches have seen Giehtbrock putting down the ball at a high rate, hitting over .400 for the Wolves. She’s also got some instinctive blocking decisions and looks like she will have a big impact in the OAA.
17. Makenzie Ritsema Makenzie Ritsema 6'0" | MB Grand Rapids Christian | 2023 State MI , MH Grand Rapids Christian/MVA
Ritsema is being slowly worked into the hitting-heavy Grand Rapids Christian offense. She will get a good education playing with the Eagles, who are loaded with talent on the outside and in the middle. Ritsema has all the tools to be another standout, and she is in good hands. She’s been able to finish when her number is called thus far.
18. Allison Berent Allison Berent 5'7" | DS/L Notre Dame Prep | 2023 State #187 Nation MI , L/DS Notre Dame Prep/Legacy
A talented defender in a crowded back row at NDP, the Irish have been looking to move Berent around this fall and she has shown a lot of ability in the front row as well. NDP has produced a lot of top-level utility talents in volleyball and Berent looks to be on her way to be the next great one.
19. Ella Schomer Ella Schomer 6'0" | RS Marian | 2023 State #142 Nation MI , RS Marian/Michigan Elite
Schomer didn’t get a chance to make her mark with Marian as a freshman, but the Mustangs are letting her swing away this fall. In early matches she has proved to be a great compliment to junior outside Ava Brizard Ava Brizard 6'0" | OH Marian | 2022 State #16 Nation MI . Schomer is another young talent for the Mustangs, but already has a great foundation of skills to build off of.
20. Kendall White Kendall White 5'6" | DS/L St. Johns | 2023 State MI , L/DS St. Johns/Five: 1
White was a very productive freshman for the Redwings, picking up over 550 digs. This fall, she’s picking up where she left off and making some incredible defensive plays to keep her team in close points. Her serve has also improved, as she has recorded 20 aces over 18 sets. White is really making a name for herself in the Lansing area.
