Continue ReadingThe next high school volleyball season won’t start in Washington until March 2021, but there’s absolutely no reason why we should wait until there to know more about the best teams in each class. In this series, we’ll dissect each of the state’s six divisions by analyzing the top teams and the most promising players and what we can expect from them when the balls are finally allowed to fly. In our opening week, we’ll bring some info on the Class 1A.
Chelan
Reigning division winners Chelan seem poised to continue on a good spot after they appeared in two of the last three finals and finished seventh in 2018. The Lady Goats will have to address the departures of two key pieces in Co-Player of the Year outside hitter Emma McLaren and fellow All-State first-teamer setter Leanna Garfoot, but with three other All-State first-team members returning they should be among the contenders again.
Their three key players are:
Elly Collins – Outside Hitter – Senior
McLaren might have been the driving force of the Lady Goats’ offense, but Elly Collins wasn’t far behind, registering 64 kills, only five less than her fellow outside hitter, during the State Championship, 19 of which in the final match against King’s. The 5’8” prospect, who already committed to play beach volleyball for the Grand Canyon University, is a great all-around player, having tallied 58 digs in Yakima, and earned an All-State first-team nomination for it.
Katie Rainville – Middle-Blocker – Senior
Katie Rainville was instrumental to Chelan’s victory at the State Championship last year and it wasn’t just because she scored the last point against King’s. The 5’9” middle-blocker was extremely valuable for the Lady Goats with her strong game at the net, which generated 45 kills and 21 blocks and placed her as an All-State first-team member, and should have an even more important role next season.
Morgyn Harrison – Libero – Junior
Morgyn Harrison is the defensive wizard that allows Chelan’s offensive stars to play more freely on the net. The 5’5” libero was nearly flawless during the Lady Goats championship-winning campaign last year as she helped her team with 88 digs in their four State Championship matches, including 27 in the final. She was also an All-State first-team player in 2019.
