In this series, we’ll dissect each of the state’s six divisions by analyzing the top teams and the most promising players and what we can expect from them when the balls are finally allowed to fly. In our opening week, we’ll bring some info on the Class 1A.
Freeman
Freeman has been as competitive as it gets in the division, having missed the quarterfinals of the State Championship for the last time back in 2013. Last season, the Scotties had to settle for fourth after falling in the semifinals to eventual champions Chelan, from which they stole a set. Expect to see a considerably different roster next season as seven seniors have graduated, but the talent level will remain high as two of the team’s three All-State team selections will be back.
Their three key players are:
Ashley Boswell – Middle-Blocker/Outside Hitter – Junior
Originally a middle-blocker, Ashley Boswell adapted to the outside hitter role extremely well and quickly became one of Freeman’s key players. At 6’1”, she has the size and the skills to be dominant on offense, but also display a good all-around game, which led her to receive an All-State team honorable mention in 2019.
Jordyn Goldsmith – Right Sider/Outside Hitter – Senior
Jordyn Goldsmith’s profile suggests she’s a strong candidate to have a successful pro career in the future. Being a lefty and standing at 6’2”, the senior has the perfect traits to play as a right sider and she’s proven she has the character to do it at the highest level last season, when she led the Scotties to a semifinal appearance and earned an All-State team honorable mention.
Sydney Arnzen – Middle-Blocker – Senior
Sydney Arnzen is the last, but not least of the giants to be part of Freeman’s roster. While Boswell and Goldsmith take the lead in the Scotties’ offensive actions, the 6’1” middle-blocker plays a pivotal role in the team’s defensive system with her tall block at the net.
