In this series, we’ll dissect each of the state’s six divisions by analyzing the top teams and the most promising players and what we can expect from them when the balls are finally allowed to fly. In our opening week, we’ll bring some info on the Class 1A.
Lynden Christian
Lynden Christian has developed a strong recent tradition in the division, winning three of the last six titles in play and having never missed the State Championships since 1996. The Lyncs couldn’t defend their 2018 title last year in Yakima, but finished in a respectable fifth place, setting the stage for another championship chase next season. They only graduated two seniors, both at the middle-blocker spot, meaning the core of the team will be back in March.
Their three key players are:
Liv King – Outside Hitter – Senior
Liv King was Lynden Christian’s most outstanding player last season, when she was an All-State second-team member. The 5’8” outside hitter has a strong game at the net, but also contributes significantly with digging and passing. King can hit the ball from anywhere in the court and she’s very calm to make decisions, which helps her to typically make the right calls.
Paige Te Velde – Setter – Senior
Paige Te Velde became Lynden Christian’s starting setter last season and she fitted in just nicely, coordinating with mastery the team’s offense. The 5’8” setter handed out 545 assists over the season and also scored several points of her own, including 44 kills, earning an All-State team honorable mention. She has reliable hands and doesn’t always go with the most obvious options, putting her hitters in great spots very often.
Emma VandeVoort – Right Sider – Senior
Emma VandeVoort’s game is still a work in progress, but she’s – literally – a big project for Lyden Christian. The 6’3” right sider spent a fair amount of last season as a bench option for the Lyncs, but came up big during the State Championship, registering 24 kills and 15 blocks. Her size allows her to go over-the-top of most opponents and she complements it with quick feet and good blocking skills at the net.
