In this series, we’ll dissect each of the state’s six divisions by analyzing the top teams and the most promising players and what we can expect from them when the balls are finally allowed to fly. In the second week, Class 1B will be in the spotlights.
Pomeroy
Pomeroy returned to the top of the division last year by winning the State Championship for the first time since 2014. A victory like that could mark the start of a period of domination for the Lady Pirates, but that won’t likely be the case as half of Pomeroy’s 2019 roster – including all of its five All-State team selections – won’t be back after graduating. It will be a rebuilding year for the Pirates, but they have enough talent to believe it won’t be as bad as it might look like.
Their three key players are:
Keely Maves – Outside Hitter – Junior
Keely Maves had a secondary role with Pomeroy last year, placing behind star seniors Maddy Dixon and Sydney Watko in the team’s offensive system. However, she was still able to impact last year’s State Championship final as she registered five kills and five blocks against Oakesdale. At 5’11”, the outside hitter has the potential to be the centerpiece of the Lady Pirates’ offense and next season should provide her that opportunity.
Emma Severs – Setter – Senior
Setter Heidi Heytvelt was the captain and one of the stars of Pomeroy’s team that won the State Championships last year, but she won’t be around when next season starts. Her big shoes will most likely be filled by Emma Severs, a 5’8” setter who is headed into her last year of high school volleyball. Severs is a prominent player at Pomeroy’s basketball team and is used to dealing with huge responsibilities and she can handles this one too, the Lady Pirates will be on a much better spot.
Kendall Dixon – Middle-Blocker – Sophomore
The middle-blocker position was one of Pomeroy’s main strengths last season as the duo of Maddy Dixon and Tegan Steele did a phenomenal job at the net for the Lady Pirates. Next year it will be up to Kendall Dixon to provide her team with a strong presence at the net. The 5’9” prospect had spent some valuable time with the star seniors last year and will now have a chance to show she learned her lessons.
