In this series, we’ll dissect each of the state’s six divisions by analyzing the top teams and the most promising players and what we can expect from them when the balls are finally allowed to fly. In the third week of our series, we present Class 2A.
Lynden
After appearing in back-to-back State Championship finals in 2017 and 2018, Lynden’s quest for its first title took a step back last season, when the Lions finished sixth in the division. The team’s most recent campaigns were propelled by the great play of the likes of All-State team members Robin Scarlett and Savonne Sterk, who both graduated, but they saw promising improvement from some young talent which will have to lead the Lions in the upcoming season.
Their three key players are:
Anna VanderYacht – Outside Hitter – Senior
Anna VanderYacht is just a talented sportsperson as besides playing volleyball, she’s also part of the school’s basketball and football teams. She’s really good in a volleyball court, though, as her back-to-back All-State team appearances (as a second-team member in 2018 and an honorable mention last year) showed. At 5’9”, VanderYacht has the size and the skills to be a prolific scorer and she’s able to score from the net or the back row with ease.
Faith Baar – Middle-Blocker – Senior
Faith Baar formed one of the best middle-blocker duos in the entire division with Sterk in 2019, but next season she’ll need to step her game up even more to be a factor for Lynden. At 6’1”, she has certainly all the tools to be a dominant force in the division as she showed during last year’s State Championship with a 22-kill performance against Pullman that cemented her name as an All-State team honorable mention.
Chevi Vanderberg – Middle-Blocker/Opposite – Junior
Lynden is at a good spot offensively with vanderYacht and Baar, but it could certainly use a third reliable scoring option and Chevi Vandenberg might provide just that. At 5’9”, the junior prospect is capable of playing as a middle-blocker or opposite, bringing a solid blocking game and an interesting potential on offense.
