A young Junior Blues squad knocked of Topeka High in straight sets and loss to Seaman in a tightly contested three-set match.
Here is a scouting report on the young talent that was displayed in the two matches.
Class of 2023 Stars
LS, Brooklyn DeLeye, 6’1” – DeLeye, just a sophomore, will surely be near the top of the Prep Dig Kansas rankings for the Class of 2023 when they are released in October. The left side hitter is a talented two-way player. She shows the ball no mercy when she strikes it. The sophomore had 15 kills and 5 digs in Washburn Rural’s 25-10, 25-8 win over Topeka High. She is tall and has a huge swing. She is a for sure Division II talent with four in-state schools I am sure will be in on her recruiting down the road. However, I think she will be a Big 12 and out-of-state Division I recruit. DeLeye added 17 kills and five digs in the second match.
LS, Taylor Russell, 6’0” – Russell is one of three sophomores starting for the Junior Blues. Her best math of the night came in the three-set loss to Seaman. She finished with 16 kills, three blocks, and nine digs. She can jump and communicates well. It’s more difficult to project what level she could play at, but she is a no-doubt college prospect, possibly more along the lines of a DII or NAIA fit. In the match against Topeka High, Russell had seven kills and four digs.
All six of Rural’s starters including freshman Zoe Canfield have bright high school careers ahead of them and possible college careers to boot.
KU Getting a Winner
S/RS, Camryn Turner Camryn Turner 5'7" | S Seaman | 2021 State KS , 5’7”, (’21 Ranked No. 11) – Seaman’s Turner, who has is verbally committed to compete for Kansas University, continued her stellar season in the Vikings 22-25, 25-21, 27-25 win over Washburn Rural. She led the Vikings in come-from-behind victory with 24 kills, six digs, and five blocks. She is a jumper who can set and hit. She never leaves the court and that could continue to happen in Lawrence for four seasons.
Bet on Brooks
Like Washburn Rural, Topeka High has a very young team. However, they do have one senior leader, who JUCO scouts may want to give a quick look. Nevaeh Brooks, a 5’9” Outside Hitter, is an athlete that in-state JUCO scouts could show interest in. She with seven digs and two kills in the low-scoring loss to the Junior Blues.
