Here are five 16th Region stock risers from Week 1 in the 2020 high school volleyball season.
Bailey Brashear Bailey Brashear MB Rowan County | 2022 State KY : A junior middle hitter, Brashear helped to lead reigning 16th Region champion Rowan County to a shutout win over 61st District nemesis Bath County in a season opener. The Vikings blanked Bath County 3-0 (25-6, 25-6, 25-13), thanks in part to Brashear’s 12 kills, 5 blocks and 6 service aces. Brashear is a force in the middle and delivers in multiple categories.
Christin Corey: Excelling at the net, Corey helped to pace Russell in wins over 16th Region rivals Raceland, Boyd County and Lewis County. A junior outside hitter/middle hitter, Corey recorded 11 kills, 10 blocks, 1 dig and 6 service aces in Russell’s first two matches. A strong jumper, Corey is explosive along the front row.
Bethany Ledford: A versatile junior for Ashland Blazer, Ledford posted 11 kills, 2 blocks, 20 digs and 3 service aces in the Kittens’ season opener versus longtime 16th Region rival West Carter. Persistent West Carter edged Ashland Blazer 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 15-6). However, Ledford helped to lead the way as Ashland Blazer blanked Rose Hill Christian 3-0 (25-13, 25-8, 25-16) in its second match in the 2020 high school volleyball season.
Kiera Loving: A sophomore setter/outside hitter, Loving thrived as Fairview shut out 16th Region counterpart Lewis County 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-15) in a season opener. Loving recorded 4 kills, 20 assists, 11 digs and 2 service aces in Fairview’s victory over Lewis County. With a diverse skill set, Loving continues to show the ability to deliver from various parts of the court.
Desarae Willis: A senior setter, Willis made a strong impression during the first match of her final prep season, leading Greenup County to a shutout win over 63rd District foe Raceland. Then, she carried momentum over into a match versus West Carter, which Greenup County dropped. Through the first two matches of her senior season, Willis has distributed 62 assists. An accurate passer, Willis has developed into a leader.
