We’ve completed the first week and there are some players who caught our eyes. One position many coaches were looking at was the setter position. Here are a handful of players who made solid varsity debuts in week 1.
Emily Pella – 5’7″ S – Park Hill – 2023
The sophomore has stepped up and appears to be the primary setter in the 5-2 offense Park Hill runs. The Trojans went 2-0 during the week and Pella showed she is more than capable of leading the charge. She has 42 assists to begin the season, including 30 in a four-set battle with Platte County. She has shown to be a good decision maker with the ability to push the ball across the court.
Brynne McGhie – 5’8″ S – St. Teresa’s Academy – 2023
Our opinion in the offseason was if the Stars were able to replace their three-year starter at the setting position, they will still be in the championship hunt. It looks like they found it in the sophomore setter. She racked up over 100 assists in her first week after a couple of 5 set battles to start the season. She has displayed great ball placement and puts the pipe set right on the money.
Carlie Cisneros – 5’11” OH – Liberty North – 2024
We were looking to see who the complement to Isabel Zimmerman Isabel Zimmerman 6'2" | RS Liberty North | 2022 State #30 Nation MO would be in 2020. It looks like it may be the person who hasn’t taken a high school class yet this fall. Cisneros had a solid debut week. After a slow start to her career in game one, she bounced back in a 4 set win over Platte County to earn 16 kills. She has good size and will continue to break out as the season develops.
Emerson Walter – 5’5″ S – Platte County – 2022
Walter had to wait her turn and in her junior season, she is taking advantage. Again, over the summer we questioned who will be the other setter in the 5-2 Pirate offense after graduating Ashley Bell Ashley Bell S Platte County | 2020 State MO . In a depleted line-up missing three starters, Walter showed she is ready to play on the big stage. During the week she dished out 42 assists and earned 17 digs. Once the team is back to full strength with her hitters, expect those numbers to rise.
MaKya Clayton – 5’6″ S – Lee’s Summit – 2023
The Tigers were happy to see Clayton back in the line up to start the 2020 season. She did not disappoint! In two sweeps last week, MaKya found her hitters to finish the week with 54 kills. She has been smart in her decision making and will continue to work in being in sync with her many quality hitters.
