A dream of many young ladies, Maisie recalls, “I remember going to my first Husker game at the Coliseum and the roar of the crowd. I asked my dad, “What does it take to play here?” All I knew about were Norris High School games. He said, “A lot of hard work.” I always remembered that as I was putting in the extra hours in the gym. I am excited to keep training and putting in those extra hours to have 2 more great high school seasons and to prepare myself to play at the next level.”
Currently, Maisie plays setter in a 5-1 system at Norris under head coach and mom Christina Boesiger, who was a standout at Norris during her prep career and also played at Nebraska Wesleyan.
Coach Boesiger comments, “Maisie is type of athlete who always wants to put in the extra touches and training. She works really hard to become a better athlete and volleyball player. I’m so excited to have her at Norris for 2 more season.”
And, as mom, Christina comments, “I am so proud of Maisie for achieving this dream. We supported her in every way during this recruiting process, but we told her all along this had to be her decision. She put a lot of time and thought into the recruiting process. We are so happy she will be close to home.”
During the recruiting process, the younger Boesiger had to decide what role she wanted to play on her future team.
“The schools that were in my top were Nebraska, University of San Diego, Louisville, Colorado, Colorado State, UNO, and Wake Forest. The offers I had were for a variety of positions. Some were 6-2 setter, 5-1 setter, and libero.”
With recruiting rules changing the last couple of years, Maisie kept on track throughout the process, “I started talking to coaches pretty early in my recruiting process. That of course changed when the rules changed, but I tried to stay in contact through emails and highlight clips until June 15 when that opened up again. I would tell other recruits to be honest and open with the coaches and ask a lot of questions. I built some really good relationships during the recruiting process, but then that also made it really hard when I had to reach out to all of the schools when I made my decision.”
When June 15 rolled around Maisie’s phone went crazy, “Right away on June 15, 30 different schools reached out to me. I think I talked/zoomed to 25 schools in the first 2 days. Coach Reyes, from Nebraska, was my first text at 12:01 am and then I zoomed with the whole Nebraska coaching staff Monday morning. As the summer went on, I gradually narrowed down my list and continued to talk to about 7-10 throughout most of the summer. It did take time, but I am really glad I did. I learned a lot about myself during this process as well. Once school started, I used my IAP time at school to still talk/zoom with coaches.”
With the current COVID situation, college visits are hard to come by. Many schools shut down visits in March and only a few have reopened for tours. Luckily, Maisie attended many camps the summer before. “Before Covid I was able to visit/attend camp at Nebraska, University of San Diego, Louisville, Colorado, Colorado State, UNO, Santa Barbara, LMU, and Wyoming. I was hoping to go on visits this fall, but that did not workout. A lot of the schools did virtual visits which was awesome. It gave me a great feel for their campus and training facilities. I was also able to do some zooms with current teammates and other recruits, so that was fun to meet the players.“
Maisie also plays club volleyball with Premier out of Omaha and adds in additional training sessions outside of those practices.
“I cannot thank my coaches enough for all they have done for me. My mom (and dad) have spent countless hours with me since I was little working on my volleyball fundamentals. I have never heard no, from them. They are willing to head to the gym with me or our court in our backyard whenever I ask. As a coach, my mom, is very picky about the little details of the game. She has instilled that disciplined side of the game in me. She has always said you have to be able to set, pass, and serve. Secondly, Gwen Egbert has had a huge influence on my volleyball training and me as an athlete. I started training with her around 4th grade and still continue train with her. She has great knowledge of the game and is so detailed in all that she does. When I first started training with her it was only on setting, but the last couple of year I do a combination of setting, defense, and serve receive. Last, my club and other high school coaches have pushed me to be a better player as well. My mom coached me in club until my freshman year, after that I made the switch to Premier. My first coach at Premier was Shannon Smolinski, and her competitive drive and spirit really brought out the leader in me.”
As of now, Maisie plans to study business or design in college.
