Last year, Owensboro Catholic beat Apollo 3-0 in the district championship to gain their 3rd straight title, so this was definitely a grudge match for the two region 3 squads.
For Apollo, Havanah John, junior, had an impressive match with 19 kills which is a season-high for her so far! Then, Aliyah Carwile, junior, and Brylee Rhodes, senior, followed with 10 kills, and Carwile tallied 3 blocks while Rhodes had 4. Anslee Hopewell, senior, led the team in digs with 14 as she continued to dominate the backrow for the Eagles. Hopewell has started for Apollo since her sophomore year where she gained the libero position and then set for the Eagles her junior year. Now, she is back to her original DS position, and Hopewell continues to show leadership on the floor with her crisp communication skills and undying hustle. Anslee is one of those girls that gives 110% all the time, and you never want her to leave the floor. Their other squad leader is Havanah John who is only a junior for the team! Hitting outside, she is a great player because of her out of system hitting skills as well as her determination to terminate the ball wherever she is on the floor.
As for Owensboro Catholic, Madeline Castlen, senior, led the team with 16 kills and 5 blocks. Castlen has been a great asset to the team for the past couple of years and continues to show her leadership on the floor. She’s the “go-to” hitter for the Lady Aces because of her insane athleticism and ability to get the job done on the outside. Next, Cate Sights Cate Sights MB Owensboro Catholic | 2022 State KY , junior, had 11 kills and Leann Lyon, senior, helped out with 7 kills. Jenna Glenn, senior, and Emily Christian, sophomore, dominated the back row where Glenn had 17 digs and Christian with 11.
The Lady Aces came close to pulling off the win in the 4th set but fell short whenever Havanah John took over for the Eagles. What’s so special for Owensboro Catholic is the bond that the team shares because there are 9 total seniors! Apollo also has 6 seniors, so both teams are highly experienced at the varsity level which normally makes an intense game! This was a great match, and it will be exciting to see them hopefully play again in the 9th district championship!
