Here is a look at a key player from each Sub-State location.
Sub State #1: At Pratt, Andale, Buhler, Nickerson, Ulysses
OH, McKenzie Fairchild, 5’10”, Andale – Fairchild is just a sophomore, but she leads Andale with 228 kills. She also as 23 blocks for Andale, who will be the top seed in the Pratt Sub State.
Sub State #2: At Wellington, Clearwater, Mulvane, Winfield
OH, Carlee Lill , 5’8”, Clearwater – The Wellington Sub State is very balanced and Clearwater should end up as the top seed. Lill, a senior, leads Clearwater with 224 kills. Lill is a player who could fit nicely with a JUCO program.
Sub State #3: At Towanda-Circle, Augusta, El Dorado, McPherson, Rose Hill
DS, Rylee Baker, 5’6”, Rose Hill – Baker has 149 kills and 137 digs for Rose Hill.
Sub State #4: At Clay Center, Abilene, Chapman, Concordia
MH, Jacey Schurle, 5’7”, Clay Center – Schurle is one of the best blockers in Class 4A and a member of the Class of 2022. She has 69 blocks for the Tigers. She also has 86 kills for Clay Center who will be the No. 1 Seed in this Sub State.
Sub State #5: At Holton, Atchison, Hayden, Wamego
OH, Kenzie Cooper Kenzie Cooper 5'8" | OH Wamego | 2021 State KS , 5’8”, Wamego (’21 Ranked No. 78) – Cooper is having a solid 2020 season. The Wamego senior has 243 kills and 141 digs for the Red Riders. Wamego will be the No. 2 seed and could win this Sub State. Atchison will be the No. 1 Seed.
Sub State #6: At Eudora, Baldwin, Louisburg, Bishop Miege, Tonganoxie
OH, Ella Martin Ella Martin 5'10" | OH Bishop Miege | 2021 State KS , 5’10”, Bishop Miege (’21 Ranked No. 26) – Martin has verbally committed to play at the Colorado School of Mines, but she would like to help Bishop Miege win a 4A State Title before heading west. She has totaled 153 digs, 128 kills, and 42 blocks.
Sub State #7: At Iola, Chanute, Fort Scott, Ottawa Paola
DS, Darby Weidl Darby Weidl 5'7" | OH Ottawa | 2021 State KS , 5’7”, Ottawa (’21 Ranked No. 37) – Weidl knows how to fill-up a volleyball box score. The senior is a solid two-row player, who does not need to come out of a game. In 2020 Weidl has amassed 445 kills and 338 digs.
Sub State #8: At Labette County, Coffeyville-Field Kindley, Independence, Parsons
OH, Anna Dean, 6’0”, Labette County – The Grizzlies are the top seed in Sub State No. 8. Junior Anna Dean leads Labette County in kills with 174. She also has 216 digs. The Grizzlies are the only team with a winning record in this Sub State and arguably the safest bet as a quarterfinal qualifier in Class 4A.
The winners of each Sub-State will qualify for the quarterfinal round which will be played on Tuesday, October 27. The four winners of those best 3-out-of-5 set matches will qualify for the State Tournament which will be played in Hutchinson.
