Continue ReadingThe PrepDig weekly awards are presented to the top player, attacker, setter, defender and team of the week. This week’s awards have been split into the Division 2 and 3 winners to try to recognize more great performers as several players for Fredericksburg Christian Academy (FCA), the lone Division 2 team playing currently, had great weeks and deserve recognition. The VISAA is currently the only high school league playing matches due to the schedule shift during the Co-Vid pandemic. Over 20 schools competed last week in matches and here are the best and brightest performances.
First, we will recognize our outstanding Division 2 performers. Our Defender of the Week award goes to Taylor Thomas from FCA. The 5’4 junior libero excelled in all four matches with 77 digs and 6 aces, including a 45 dig performance and 5 aces in a hard fought 5 set loss to Division 1 Collegiate. She had 71 serve receptions with only one error. Taylor is also the overall state leader in digs for the 2020 season. Our Setter of the Week is senior Emma Shaeffer Emma Shaeffer 5'4" | S Fredericksburg Christian | 2021 State VA . Emma led the offense to a 3-1 record and amassed 122 assists in 4 matches for the Eagles and added in 10 kills, 14 digs and 14 aces for good measure. Paige Bachman Paige Bachman 6'2" | MB Fredericksburg Christian | 2021 State VA is our Attacker of the Week. The two sport star was dominant during the week crushing 34 kills in three matches for FCA and adding in 9 aces. Paige is currently leading the state in aces. Sydney Whittaker Sydney Whittaker DS/L Frederickburg Christian | 2022 State VA , the Junior Outside Hitter, continued her stellar two way play to earn the PrepDig POTW honors. In two matches, Sydney had 36 kills, 24 digs, 2 aces and 2 blocks. She also had just one reception error in serve receive. In both matches she posted a double-double in kills and assists.
For the Division 3 awards, there were several great performances including by Denbigh Baptist standouts Hope Parrish (27 kills, 3 aces, 19 digs), Payten Gary (11 kills, 4 aces, 11 digs); Portsmouth Christian’s Freshman Alli Pena (8 blocks), junior setter Emma Beasley (34 assists), and senior attacker Victoria Tucker (13 kills); Stonebridge’s Freshman Phenom Amelia Matson (30 kills, 8 aces, 8 digs), Atlantic Shores Christian Junior Georgia Thompson (14 kills, 6 aces and 16 digs) and Grove Christian’s Senior Outside Hitter Lara Santana with 16 kills and 8 aces.
Abby Hinton Abby Hinton 5'3" | DS/L Stonebridge | 2021 State VA , the 2019 Second Team All State libero, is our PrepDig Defender of the Week. For the week, the Senior Libero had 19 digs in two matches and 7 aces for the undefeated perennial State Champion Stonebridge Cavaliers. She is inching closer to the 500 career dig milestone as her prep career closes this academic season.
Sophomore Setter Berkeley Stenger of Denbigh Baptists earns her second PrepDig Setter of the Week Award with a 50 assist performance in a 5 set battle against Gateway Christian. She added in 8 kills and 6 aces in the loss. the 5’5 captain has already surpassed 500 assists in her career.
Senior Outside Hitter Grace Bickley Grace Bickley 5'9" | OH Portsmouth Christian | 2021 State VA is our Attacker of the Week with great performances in two matches last week for Portsmouth Christian. The 5’9 All State Selection killed 25 balls last week and a whopping 16 aces. She added in 11 digs and 4 blocks for the Lady Patriots.
Megan James Megan James 5'7" | OH Guardian Christian | 2022 State VA earns yet another award for the Guardian Christian Academy, this time with the PrepDig VISAA Division 3 Player of the Week award. The 5’7 powerhouse amassed 57 kills, 10 aces and 46 digs for the week as a bright spot for a rebuilding GCA team. Coming off a First Team All State performance in 2019, this season seems to be even brighter for the Division 3 leader in kills and aces.
