First we broke the players down by division and then we switched gears to analyze who are expected to be the most outstanding athletes in the top teams of each of those divisions.
For the next several weeks, we’ll dive even deeper, taking a closer look at each of the 46 district leagues in the state of Washington and pointing out the players we believe will be worth your attention in the near future.
The third district we take a look at is 1A Evergreen, which has five high schools set to compete, and some of their players with the greatest upside are:
Sarah Bridge – Middle-Blocker – Senior – Elma
Sarah Bridge showed a solid game as a complementary piece for Elma in 2019, being the team’s third best-scorer after the Eagles’ trio of star seniors. The 5’1” middle-blocker registered 45 kills in the past campaign, but this number is very likely to increase next season with her moving into a more central role in the team’s offense. Bridge’s blocking game was also impressive with a team’s second-best 16 blocks and took her to the All-League second team.
Malika Slassi – Middle-Blocker – Junior – Tenino
Tenino was at the bottom of the district last season having lost all of its five matches and not winning even a set, but if there was something positive to be taken from the Beavers’ campaign it was Malika Slassi’s performance. The 5’6” middle-blocker went against the team’s struggles to earn herself a spot in the All-League team as an honorable mention. Also a basketball player, Slassi should be in a position to give the next step forward on her development next season.
Kayla Aho – Libero – Senior – Elma
Defense was also a key part of Elma’s success last season and in that department, most of the credits should go to Kayla Aho. The 5’1” libero excelled on her backcourt duties, making of the Eagles a team hard to score on and earning an All-League honorable mention. Aho delivered in great fashion with 88 digs and 57 passes, but also helped the team score points with her ten aces.
