After bowing out early in the 2019 season to a tough Seckman team, the Lions have taken charge in 2020 with an early 13-2 mark on the season. Already avenging their season-ending loss with a 3-2 victory over Seckman, the Lions have continued to roll and are hopeful that they can make the late push to make it out of district play this year.
With big contributions from multiple players on a senior-heavy roster, the Lions look to rely on senior leadership this season. However, with a bright spot in young and upcoming sophomore Jordan Christopher, Northwest shows promise for the future. Here are their statistical leaders:
- Maureen Mathews, MH, Senior
- 140 kills, 4.4 kills/set (hitting .427%), 14 aces, 21 blocks, 84 digs
- Lizzy Vermillon, OH, Junior
- 94 kills, 12 aces, 97 digs
- Torie Strange, DS, Junior
- 136 digs at 4.1 digs/set, 12 aces
- Jillian Schmoll, S, Senior
- 308 assists at 9.3 assists/set, 13 aces, 104 digs
- Jordan Christopher, OH, Sophomore
- 62 kills, 31 digs, 11 aces
Most recently, the Lions captured first place in the Neosho Tournament with a 2-0 (25-16, 25-8) victory over Riverton. With one of two losses coming to Class 3 powerhouse Perryville, Northwest continues to play tough competition with their final scheduled match before post-season play against Lafayette (Wildwood). With a trip to the state tournament being something the Lions look to accomplish for the first time ever, Northwest is definitely a team to pay attention to.
