Here is a look at a key player from each Sub-State location.
Sub State #1: At Great Bend, Hays, Salina Central, Salina South
OH, Julie Calzonetti, 5’10”, Garden City – Calzonetti is a senior who is has had a solid season for Garden City. Through October 16, she had totaled 113 kills and 129 digs. She is a solid two-way player who could play at the Junior College Level.
Sub State #2: At Maize South, Goddard, Goddard-Eisenhower, Maize
MH, Avery Lowe, 6’1”, Maize South – Lowe is just a sophomore, but she will be a highly recruited member of the Class of 2023. Lowe is tall and can jump. She has 61 blocks and 112 kills for a talented Mavericks team. This Sub-State has two really good teams in Maize South and Maize.
Sub State #3: At Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Arkansas City, Valley Center, Bishop Carroll
L, Emma Bond, 5’2”, Valley Center – The Hornets will have a tough time qualifying for a quarterfinal match-up, but their Libero Emma Bond is fun to watch. She has a quality serve and could top out as a DII prospect, but she is still very young, as she is just a sophomore.
Sub State #4: At Andover Central, Andover, Emporia, Newton,
OH, Asha Reiger, 5’9”, Newton – Reiger, a senior, is one of the top hitters in Class 5A. She has 433 kills and 311 digs in 2020. Newton is on pace to be the No. 2 Seed in this region. Reiger is a solid two-way player who can jump. She will need to produce if the Railroaders are to advance to the Quarterfinals.
Sub State #5: At Seaman, Shawnee Heights, Highland Park, Topeka West
S, Camryn Turner Camryn Turner 5'7" | S Seaman | 2021 State KS , 5’7”, (’21 Ranked No. 11) – Turner is a dynamic player who plans to continue her volleyball career at Kansas University. She can flat out jump and play all over the court. Turner might play as a setter as Jayhawk, but first and foremost she is an elite high school hitter. When Turner gets on top of the ball, she crushes it.
Sub State #6: At Leavenworth, Basehor Linwood, Piper, Lansing
MH, Iyannah Jackson Iyannah Jackson 6'0" | MB Lansing | 2022 State KS , 6’1”, Lansing (’22 Ranked No. 15) – Lansing is a perfect 21-0 in 2020 and will be the favorites in this Sub State. The Lions has a big middle hitter who is leading the squad. Jackson, a junior, has 116 kills and 24 blocks in 2020. Jackson is currently ranked No. 15 in the Prep Dig Kansas Class of 2022 rankings. Her services could be highly sought after when volleyball recruiting heats up.
Sub State #7: At Saint James Academy, Bonner Springs, De Soto, Mill Valley, Turner
OH, Keyana Cruse Keyana Cruse 6'1" | MB Bonner Springs | 2021 State KS , 6’0”, Bonner Springs (’21 Ranked No. 6) – Bonner Springs will be a dark horse team in this tough Sub State loaded with talent. Cruse is one of the leading hitters in Class 5A. The 6’0 senior has 365 kills in 2020 to go along with 226 digs. She has verbally committed to play at UNLV after her high school career is completed. She hopes that career will end with a match in Salina at the 5A State Tournament.
Sub State #8: At Spring Hill, Blue Valley Southwest, St. Thomas Aquinas, Pittsburg
DS, Caroline Bien Caroline Bien 6'0" | OH St. Thomas Aquinas | 2021 State KS , 5’11”, St. Thomas Aquinas (’21 Ranked No. 2) – Bien is an all-around volleyball player who never needs to leave the court. She has verbally committed to play at Kansas University after high school. She has 209 serve receptions, 179 digs, and 154 kills heading into Sub State action.
The winners of each Sub-State will qualify for the quarterfinal round which will be played on Tuesday, October 27. The four winners of those best 3-out-of-5 set matches will qualify for the State Tournament which will be played in Salina on October 31.
