With many state finalists facing tough district play, it is a constant battle to make the trip back to Cape Girardeau, MO for a chance to play for a state title. Let’s take a look at some of the state finalists from 2019 and how they are following up in this 2020 season:
Class 1: Santa Fe
Santa Fe closed out the 2019 season with a 33-3-4 record, losing to Advance in the championship match. Off to a 7-2 start in the 2020 season, the Chiefs are led by junior Isabella Limback and senior Kara Hollingsworth. Limback paces the Chiefs offense with 148 kills, 5.5 kills/set, hitting .408% on the season; while Hollingsworth has racked up 113 assists, on 4.3 assists/set.
Class 2: St. Pius X (Festus)
The Lancers of St. Pius X finished the 2019 season at 25-5-2, losing to Hermann in the championship match. With a reloaded roster, the Lancers are 12-4-3 in 2020, led by junior Kennedy Lane Kennedy Lane 5'9" | OH St. Pius X | 2022 State MO (245 kills, 5.1 kills/set, hitting .310%), junior Summer Meyer (169 digs, 3.5 digs/set), senior Kirsten Schrader (68 kills, 114 digs), senior Sarah Wells (203 assists, 9.7 assists/set), and sophomore Hannah Burch (250 assists, 5.4 assists/set).
Class 3: Logan-Rogersville
The Logan-Rogersville Wildcats (8-5-1) finished the 2019 campaign with a 35-5-1 and a 1-2 loss in the state finals to St. Francis Borgia. After graduating a phenomenal class, the Wildcats now rely on a healthy mix of veterans and newcomers. With contributions from sophomores to seniors, the team is led by junior Brianna Linehan with 104 kills and 3.3 digs/set, sophomore Natalie Scott with 251 digs at 6.4 digs/set, senior McKinzie Thompson with 81 kills and 87 digs, senior Samantha Thompson with 350 assists at 9.0 assists/set and 108 digs, and senior Chelsea Schatzer with 39 blocks and 78 kills.
Class 4: Lafayette (Wildwood)
Lafayette has a rich history of success at the state tournament, with many state titles under the belt. The Lancers 2019 season came to an end in the state championship match, finishing with a 30-9-2 mark. With a bad taste in their mouths, the Lancers are primed to finish their season with a win this year, starting with a perfect 6-0 record. Led by the senior trio of Morgan Isenberg (18 blocks, 28 kills), Lexi Basler (59 digs at 5.4 digs/set), and Jenny Nguyen (95 assists at 8.6 assists/set), they are aided by sophomore Caitlyn Little with 25 kills on the season.
