The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and Under Armour have released their 2020 watch list for the top high school players in Virginia. To be eligible, the players have to be nominated by their head coach who are members of the AVCA and selected from thousands of nominees by a selection committee. From the watch list, the committee will select three All Region Teams on November 4, 2020. On November 11, 2020, the committee will select three teams of 24 players to participate in the Under Armour All American game. The game is tentatively scheduled for January 1, 2021 in Orlando, Florida. The remaining 72 athletes will be honored with the Honorable Mention Awards.
Fifteen seniors were selected to the watch list from the Commonwealth. A mixture of public and private schools make up the list. Four setters, one Libero, one middle hitter, one opposite and eight outside hitters make up these outstanding young women. Three of these great players have made their college commitments with details to follow. The remaining players are sought after as major impact players for several college programs.
Quinn Menger, the VISAA First Team All State setter from the St. Catherine’s Saints in Richmond, VA, heads off our list. Quinn had an amazing 2019 season for the state runner-up Saints in the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association. The dynamic lefty setter is taking her athleticism, high IQ and tenacity to join the perennial powerhouse Penn State Nittany Lions in the Fall of 2021. Quinn has dreamed of becoming a Nittany Lion since she was in elementary school so her historic high school career has led to an opportunity at her dream school.
Jaydyn Clemmer, a strong Outside Hitter and Libero from Rockbridge County High School (Lexington, VA), joins the watch list from the smallest public school of our honorees. Standing at 5’9, the dominant outside hitter has collected 757 career kills and 1077 digs. She has great movement to the ball on serve receive and defense and hits with great range offensively. Her career hitting percentage is .286 which is very good for a player who gets the amount of attempts that she takes. In October 2019, Jaydyn made a verbal commitment to become a Hokie for the Virginia Tech Volleyball program.
Mary Page is a 5’9 Outside Hitter for Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, VA. Mary is an outstanding dual surface athlete with a strong game on the hard court and an outstanding player on the sand. She finished 2nd at the 2017 Beach Tour Championships and 5th out of 110 teams at Beach Nationals. She will have a variety of options with her outstanding ball control and attacking efficiency.
Karis Park has been patrolling the back court for the Chantilly Chargers and for VA Juniors Volleyball Program for many years. The outstanding 5’2 Libero and Defensive Specialist is known for her outstanding ball control and relentless pursuit. She’s great at controlling the first contact and is very adept at setting out of system balls when the team’s setter is unable to make the second contact. She has infectious energy and her love and passion for the game shows when she takes the court. The dominant defender will continue her playing career for the Hoyas of Georgetown University in nearby Washington, DC.
Sydney Jones rounds out this segment of the players on the Under Armour AVCA All American Watch list. The outstanding 5’9 setter for VA Juniors and Thomas Edison High School in Alexandria should have another stellar campaign this coming season. The 2019 season was ripe with awards for the future Colgate Raider (NCAA Div 1, Hamilton, NY). She was named District Player of the Year, First Team All Region and First Team All State and led TEHS to a 17-4 record. The dynamic setter runs a fast tempo offense and can get to most and ball and still run the offense in the system on most any type of pass. She sees her hitters and the defense well. She’s deceptive but puts her hitters in great positions and one on one match-ups.
