Continue ReadingIndiana’s sectional titles have been handed out, and with only 64 teams remaining in the four classes, we are on to regionals. Structured with two regional semifinals in the morning and the regional championship in the evening of the 24th, we’re taking time to talk about the middles in the class of ’23 that will be huge factors in each team’s success.
Grace Schroeder Grace Schroeder 5'11" | MB Mount Vernon (Posey) | 2023 State IN , 5-11, Mount Vernon (Posey)
The 26-7 Wildcats pulled a reverse sweep over then-3A #4 Evansville Memorial, winning in five and pulling away in the fifth, 15-7. Making the team as a freshman, Grace has spent time as both a middle and a setter in high school, while hitting on both pins for Evansville United during club season. The task doesn’t get much easier for the Wildcats, as 24-9 Vincennes Lincoln awaits. The winner of that match may get undefeated Greensburg for the right to go to the state final four.
Camryn Wise Camryn Wise 5'11" | MB Wapahani | 2023 State IN , 5-10, Wapahani
The Raiders come into the regional with a 25-5 record, and will play a 23-7 South Adams team that cruised through their sectional. At three kills per set while hitting over .300, Miss Wise is the other sophomore phenom for Wapahani ( Chloe Cook Chloe Cook 5'9" | OH Wapahani | 2023 State IN being the other). Responsible for the most points scored for the Raiders (275 kills, 75 aces, 62 blocks), Camryn’s Munciana training kicks in pretty smoothly. Her 15 kills, 3 aces and 4 blocks in the five-set epic sectional semifinal against Alexandria-Monroe were much needed.
Taryn Kennedy Taryn Kennedy 5'11" | MB Center Grove | 2023 State IN , 5-11, Center Grove
The 21-10 Trojans, after winning the MIC conference title, needed every last drop of effort to outlast the Grizzly Cubs from Franklin Community over the weekend to win their sectional in five sets. Although CG has been a two-attacker team from the beginning of the season, you can’t get this far without contributions from someone—anyone—else. With Katie Egenolf Katie Egenolf 6'1" | OH Center Grove | 2022 State #108 Nation IN (#2 in the ’22 rankings) and Grace Boggess Grace Boggess 6'3" | MB Center Grove | 2021 State IN (’21, Butler commit) receiving the lion’s share of the praise and workload, it is Miss Kennedy that is the next option, ranking #3 in kills and #2 in blocks on her team. They’re going to need her; next up is a 25-4 Evansville Reitz team, with the winner getting either upstart Martinsville or southern Indiana powerhouse Providence.
