This Fall of 2020 season is far from what anyone expected but two teams made the best of it and deserve recognition for their efforts to make the best of a bad situation. Fredericksburg Christian Academy and Atlantic Shores Christian are the only two VISAA teams to play a significant schedule this Fall. Others have either cancelled their season or followed suit with the public schools and move to Spring 2021. FCA is a perennial powerhouse in high school volleyball. The Eagles program is based in Fredericksburg and always seems to have multiple nominees for All State and other accolades.
Fredericksburg Christian Academy went 15-1 on the season, the lone blemish came in an epic 5 set match against Division 1 the Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia. Collegiate took the first two sets while FCA rallied back taking sets three and four, forcing a 5th set. The fifth set went to extra points with Collegiate prevailing 17-15 in the 5th set. The Eagles swept Grace Christian (Mechanicsville, VA) on October 27 to end the 2020 campaign.
Atlantic Shores Christian High School in Chesapeake, Virginia also played matches this Fall, accumulating a 5-6 effort with two matches to go November 9 versus Denbigh Baptist and Hampton Christian Academy. The Seahawks won an epic match against the Minutemen from Denbigh Baptist earlier this season, winning 15-9 in the fifth. Senior Hitter Kayleigh Lance had a double-double with a team high 19 kills and 14 digs. Setter Kara Stainbach provided senior leadership to the team and the offense with 14 digs and 33 assists. They also defeated Hampton Christian in their previous season match-up 3-1. Led by Junior Hitter Georgia Thompson with a double-double (10 kills, 11 digs) adding in 6 aces. Kayleigh Lance also continued her offensive dominance with another double-double (17 kills, 14 digs) and senior Setter Kara Stainback added 23 assist, 9 digs and 6 aces.
Paige Bachman Paige Bachman 6'2" | MB Fredericksburg Christian | 2021 State VA starts off our list of outstanding players for 2020. The two sport star concluded her high school volleyball career with 547 kills, 85 aces, 95.5 blocks and 130 digs. The 6’2 Middle Hitter is the 2020 PrepDig VISAA Division II Player of the Year. She led the state in Hitting Percentage (.557), Kills (144), Aces (59) and Blocks (20). Paige will leave the hardwood to fulfill her dreams on the diamond and playing softball for the Liberty University Flames in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Emma Shaeffer Emma Shaeffer 5'4" | S Fredericksburg Christian | 2021 State VA , the Senior Setter and daughter of Head Coach Jeff Shaeffer, is a perennial dominant force in running the offense for the Eagles. The 5’4 First Team All State Selection in 2019 led the state in assists this year with 431 and second in aces with 42. She finished her career with 2761 assists, 259 aces and 405 digs.
Sydney Whittaker Sydney Whittaker DS/L Frederickburg Christian | 2022 State VA , the 5’11 Junior Outside Hitter, continued her dominance of her high school career with a strong 2020 season. She was top 5 in Hitting Percentage (3rd: .304), Kills (2nd: 132), Aces (5th: 31) and Digs (5th: 51). She has 505 career kills and 321 digs in her career and will assume the role of top offensive player with Paige’s graduation.
Taylor Thomas, the 5’4 Junior Libero is the captain of the backcourt for the Eagles. She was third in assists as a non-setter, 4th in aces and one of two players to reach 200 digs in the 2020 season.
Other top performers from FCA include Madi Bachman, a 5’10 Sophomore Middle Hitter had 46 kills and 12 blocks and was second in Hitting Percentage at .309 for the season.
Kayleigh Lance was the offensive leader for Atlantic Shores Christian High School. The 6’0 senior hits every position across the net and currently leads the team in Kills, Hitting Percentage and Digs. Kara Stainback is the leader of the offense as the team’s primary setter. The 5’5 Senior has 156 assists this season, 16 aces and 58 digs. Georgia Thompson is the other offensive option for the Seahawks. The 5’6 junior leads the team in aces and is second in kills, hitting percentage and is third in digs.
