The VISAA is currently the only high school league playing matches due to the schedule shift during the Co-Vid pandemic. There were some high quality performances this week as the season starts to wind down with a sanctioned state championship event.
The Carmel School Volleyball Team is our Team of the Week. The Lady Wildcats swept all three matches in convincing fashion and slowed down Megan James Megan James 5'7" | OH Guardian Christian | 2022 State VA from the Guardian Christian Academy to a season low 10 kills. The Wildcats improved to 7-8 and ended a 6 match losing streak. They swept Grove Christian, Williamsburg Christian and Guardian Christian last week.
Emily Nordwall is our Defender of the Week. The junior from Broadwater Academy had 23 digs on the week for the Lady Vikings in a 1-1 week. The team beat Denbigh Baptist, but was swept by perennial powerhouse, Stonebridge. The 5’9 Outside hitter led the team in digs in both matches, tallying 13 digs in the win over Denbigh and 10 digs against Stonebridge.
Senior Grace Bickley Grace Bickley 5'9" | OH Portsmouth Christian | 2021 State VA is our Attacker of the Week, coming off a AVCA State Player of the Week performance last week. Grace’s Portsmouth Christian Patriots won a 4 set match against Atlantic Shores Christian. The 5’9 Outside Hitter had 15 kills, 3 aces, a digs and has a 97% Serve Reception percentage. The 2019 First Team All State selection is continuing her dominant scholastic career, ranking 10th in Kills and 2nd Hitting Percentage. She is the top Outside Hitter in the State in Hitting Percentage and is 23 kills away from 500 in her career.
Berkeley Stenger is part of a dynamic sophomore duo for Denbigh Baptist and the setter for the team She is our Setter of the Week (October 25-31, 2020). The 5’5 co-captain helped the minutemen to strong with double-double performances in all three matches last week. Berkeley amassed 71 assists in 12 sets. She added 37 digs, 17 kills and 7 aces. She’s 5th in the conference in Hitting Percentage and second in the state with 217 assists going into this week’s action. She’s also 5th in digs in the state. Berkeley is 9 assist away from 600 in her young career.
Hope Parrish is our Player of the Week with dominant performances offensively and defensively for the Denbigh Baptist Minutemen. The 5’8 Outside Hitter is continuing her dominant season accumulating a double-double in all three matches last week. She totaled 59 kills, 75 digs and 10 aces for the week. She had 20 kills against Broadwater Academy and Hampton Christian Academy, adding in season high 34 digs in the Broadwater Academy match. She is currently 7th in Hitting Percentage in the state, 2nd in total kills and second in digs (182) on the season. She is 11 kills from 400 in her career.
