However, as a lot of the top setters in the state are upperclassmen, it is easy to look past the young sophomore’s that make their team’s offense go. Let’s take a look at some of the top sophomore setters that show promise to take the big stage soon:
- Grace Hinks, Lesterville
– Hinks was the lone setter in a 5-1 offense for a Lesterville team that went 24-11-2 before losing to Advance 1-3 in playoffs. In that last match, Hinks had eight digs and 30 assists. For the season, Hinks ran an effective offense that hit .261% and racked up 1,321 team kills on 13.0 kills/set. There is a bright future ahead for Hinks, and she definitely set a good pace as she finished her first varsity season with 1,154 assists, 27 aces, and 222 digs. -

– Liberty relied heavily on Mullen to lead them to a 19-7 record, and an eventual season-ending loss to Park Hill South in district play; Mullen picked up 10 digs and 42 assists in the match. With only 83 sets played, Mullen was able to set her team to a .245 hitting percentage as she averaged 11.4 assists/set, also accumulating 943 assists, 34 aces, and 178 digs. Mullen will look to continue to run the team’s effective offense that put away 13.2 kills/set in the 2020 season. -

– Carl Junction utilized Jones in their 5-1 offense for a team that pushed to a 24-7 record before ending their season in a 2-3 loss to Willard in playoffs; Jones had one of her best performances of the season in this loss as she finished with 12 digs and 53 assists. Setting her team to a .219 hitting percentage on the season, Jones closed out her varsity season debut with 913 assists, 48 aces, and 186 digs. -

– Lee’s Summit went 21-6 before losing a tight 2-3 contest to Liberty North in playoffs; through those five sets Clayton handed out 49 assists. In the 82 sets she played this season, Clayton averaged 10.3 assists/set while setting her team to a .222 hitting percentage. Off to a hot start for her high school career, Clayton finished her sophomore season with 841 assists, 27 aces, and 164 digs; with her season-high performance coming in a 3-2 win over Park Hill South where she produced 55 assists. -

– Swindle has been impressive in the setting position for Rock Bridge all season long. For a team that finished the season at 25-3-1 and with a 2-3 loss to St. Dominic in playoffs, Swindle paced the offense with 9.1 assists/set and a collective team hitting percentage of .237%. Swindle herself collected 776 assists, 49 aces, and 202 digs in her sophomore season; with her season-high performance coming in a 3-2 win over Camdenton where she dished out 58 assists.
Other sophomore setters of note include Ady Horn (Staley), Payge Plank (Republic), Brynne McGhie (St. Teresa’s Academy), Gracie Marks (Drexel), and Kamille Graham (St. Vincent).
