So many really highly respected athletes all in one place…it was impressive. I have missed the sounds of a full gym this year during our times we were not allowed to play and I am thankful we all had an opportunity to evaluate and enjoy our time in the gym today. Let’s talk about the middle and right side hitters I saw on court two this morning.
115 – Lauren Williams (2022, RS, St.Albert High School)
Lauren is a 5’11″ RS from St.Albert High School who had 2.7 KPS, 53 total blocks with 44 of those being solo blocks, 2.3 DPS, and 14 aces with an 89% serving efficiency. Lauren is deadly on the right side or the middle of the court. She is also a fantastic defender. Her high school was a semi-finalist at the Iowa State Volleyball Tournament in November and Lauren is the main reason they beat Janesville, #1 seed in class 1A, in the fourth set in the quarter-finals. St. Albert was down 17-24 to Janesville in the fourth set and Lauren got 5 of the 7 points necessary to win that final set and knock Janesville out of the tournament by getting a couple of kills and a few blocks in a row. She is really athletic, has a high volleyball IQ, and a powerful left-handed swing.
22 – Liz Carbaugh (2022, MH, Red Oak High School)
Liz is a 5’11″ MH from Red Oak in Southwest Iowa who had 2.3 KPS, 55 total blocks with 21 solo blocks, and .5 DPS. She has such a tall reach, and my notes say good hitter, probably a true 6-rotation player, smart blocker, great hits off the tape, good placement, and a high volleyball IQ. Such a smart and athletic player should really be looked at for the next level of this sport. Red Oak also finished their season as a quarterfinalist at the Iowa State Volleyball Tournament in class 3A, losing to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.
62 – Addie Kirkegaard Addie Kirkegaard 6'2" | MB Hastings St. Cecilia | 2022 State NE (2022, MH, St. Cecelia High School)
Addie is a 6’1″ MH from St. Cecelia High School who had 3.9 KPS, 87 total blocks with 20 solo blocks, .6 DPS, and 3 assists. My notes say she has a high volleyball IQ, massive hits, great kills, and the best I have seen here. That is saying a lot. Honestly, after typing that, I don’t feel like I have typed enough about this player…but there you go. She looks massive on the court comparatively speaking, and that is saying a lot considering who else she was on the court with.
101 – Hannah Shaw (2022, RS, Wheaton Academy)
Hannah is a 5’11” RS hitter from Wheaton Academy who had some great moments on the court this weekend. She was great at serve/receive, she has a good bump set, and she can smack it down on the right side with an exclamation point. Very good player and really smart as well. She had great anticipation and seemed to be a step ahead of her competition.
