We still have seniors that don’t have a place to play for next fall that are more than capable of carrying the load. Here are five setters that are looking for a place to play that can make a difference at the next level. For the record, the clubs listed are the clubs they played at last season; I don’t have a confirmation yet this year for these five.
Caitlin Murphy Caitlin Murphy 5'7" | S Brownsburg | 2021 State IN , 5-7, Brownsburg, Team Indiana
This unassuming, wiry setter is more than capable of fitting whatever plan you have. She’s run both a 5-1 and a 6-2 at some point this past fall for the sectional champion Bulldogs, and took a set off of the state champions (Yorktown) in the regional. Her hands are high, quick and soft, she plays defense at an above average level, and sets at the open level for TI.
Sarah Weglarz Sarah Weglarz 5'9" | S Westfield | 2021 State IN , 5-8, Westfield, Academy
Another setter that has been in a 5-1 and a 6-2, her smarts and set location set her apart from most in this list. Sarah’s a bit more offensive than the average setter, averaging over a kill per set and hitting over .300 in the process. Her defensive abilities are also above average, a trait not normally seen in setters from Indiana.
Molly Shannon Molly Shannon 5'10" | S Perry Meridian | 2021 State IN , 5-10, Perry Meridian, Academy
Terminally placed on a team that can’t pass, every ball Molly sets is hittable. Her location, despite her teams’ inabilities to receive serve is one of a multitude of reasons to have Miss Shannon as part of your squad. She plays good defense, blocks well, and is a positive influence to her teammates, despite their misgivings. All Molly needs is an opportunity.
Lilly Snyder Lilly Snyder 5'9" | S Heritage Christian | 2021 State IN , 5-9, Heritage Christian, Munciana Indy
The only state champion on this list (2019), Lilly is the unassuming, quiet leader of one of the best high school programs in the state. Her ability to distribute evenly and locate every ball where it needs to be helped get two of her teammates full schollies (Purdue and Arkansas State). Lilly is yet another player on this list that, for lack of a better phrase, just needs a chance to shine.
Bailey Reynolds Bailey Reynolds 5'8" | S Trinity Lutheran | 2021 State IN , 5-8, Trinity Lutheran
No club is listed because, frankly, I have no idea where she plays club ball. However, this is a kid that always seems to be on a winning program at TL and competing for state championships nearly every year (state finalist in 2019). She’s fiery, athletic, smart and hyper competitive. I like her attitude and her leadership, something that seems to be lacking in setters in Indiana these days.
