First, we broke the players down by division and then we switched gears to analyze who are expected to be the most outstanding athletes in the top teams of each of those divisions.
For the next several weeks, we’ll dive even deeper, taking a closer look at each of the 46 district leagues in the state of Washington and pointing out the players we believe will be worth your attention in the near future.
Our first district in 2021 is the 3A South Sound, which features eight high schools and their three best players are:
Devyn Oestreich – Outside Hitter – Senior – Capital
Devyn Oestreich is a versatile and intelligent hitter who knows exactly when it’s time to use her power or to play it smart at the net. Those skills have worked out well for the 5’11” outside hitter, who was pivotal to State Championships runners-up Capital’s offense in 2019 with 270 kills. A two-time All-State team member (second team in 2018 and first team in 2019), Oestreich also possesses a strong all-around game, which generated 55 aces, 220 digs and 404 passes for the Cougars last season. Her future is already set as she committed to Western Washington University.
Chloe Yerex – Setter/Right Sider – Senior – Gig Harbor
Chloe Yerex is a Swiss army knife of sorts for Gig Harbor. The 5’9” prospect splits her time between setter and right sider in the Tides’ 6-2 playing system and is equally as important in both positions. Yerex has a great touch on the ball and combines it with great body control and coordination, making of her one of the most technically sound players in the district. And she also plays beach volleyball. Her enormous potential, which led her to receive an All-State team honorable mention last year, was spotted by Texas A&M, which secured a commitment from her for her college career.
Madison Nichols – Middle-Blocker – Senior – Capital
Madison Nichols is one of the most versatile and well-rounded middle-blockers in the entire state. Her game for Capital is not limited to hitting and blocking, two skills she excels at, and that generated 222 and 50 points for the Cougars in 2019, respectively. The 5’8” Nichols is also an excellent defender, having registered a team-high 238 digs in 2019, and a capable server, having notched 42 aces. She was an All-State first-team selection last season and has already committed her future to Boise State.
