This next group of girls’ are able to make massive impacts defensively. They have speed, anticipation and are athletic which give opposing offenses fits. Let’s take a look at the top players returning at libero.
Seniors
Jessie Loudon (Verona)
Loudon is one who was the focal point on defense for Verona. She racked up 318 digs and added in 29 assists. Her passing is mesmerizing by how they are perfect they are to help turn defense into offense instantly.
Celinez Velez (Payne Tech)
Velez for Payne Tech is one who was all over the court. Her speed on the court allowed her to rack up 192 digs. Watch for her to put up even larger numbers this season.
Elba Minchala (West Caldwell Tech)
Minchala had a solid year for West Caldwell Tech has one of their few bright spots. She finished with 229 digs and 23 assists. She’s going to be one of the leaders this season to try and turn West Caldwell Tech around.
Elsa Mila-Wilkotz (Montclair)
Mila-Wilkotz had a solid season for Montclair with 172 digs and 93 assists. Her passing and versatility is what makes her effective as she can also play setter need be. She knows where she would the want the ball as a setter so she makes sure she does that when she’s playing libero.
P.J. Dowd (Montclair Kimberly)
Dowd is one of the leaders of a young Montclair Kimberly squad. She’s going to need to maintain that responsibility with only a couple seniors on the roster. She had 184 digs last season and don’t be surprised if she’s around that number again this year.
Juniors
Fiona Tillyer (Newark Academy)
Tillyer was a breakout performer on a Newark Academy squad that struggled last year. She finished with 349 digs. Her court presence and anticipation is what makes her a great libero. She was getting to balls many thought would be hitting the ground. Watch for her to step up this year as a leader as well.
Sidney Kinsale (Millburn)
Kinsale is one who sat behind a libero on the dominant Millburn squad last year. She still came in and showed her potential with 106 digs. I expect her to have a breakout season as she steps into a more prominent role for Millburn.
These ladies put there teams in position for success and reach balls that many think it will be a point. They all have the capability to have great spring seasons’ and make impacts on their squads. Watch out for them as they will be battling it out for first-team honors.
