Continue Reading2020 had it’s ups and downs, but there is volleyball in sight at the High School level for spring 2021. These teams will be tasked to take on challenges nobody could have predicted but these teams are capable of overcoming them and play the game they love. There are teams with opportunities to have great seasons who came close in 2019. One team to watch is West Windsor-Plainsboro South.
West Windsor-Plainsboro South were a solid team last year with plenty of depth and gave everyone some playing time to showcase their talent. The squad has everyone returning potentially. You heard me right, this team will have everyone back! This presents a grand opportunity for them to improve off a 21-7season. They had the potential of doing something great last season and now they are a squad to take the next step this season.
The team is bringing back some outstanding talent and have the potential to do something special. The squad finished second in their BCSL division behind Princeton. However, the squad had the best record overall. They went into the BCSL tournament with the fourth seed and reached the finals but they came up short against their rivals in Princeton. The squad then went onto the NJSIAA Group 4 tournament where they were eliminated in the second round to Hunterdon Central.
Some players to look out for this year are Sibana Gonzalez, Alisa Vukovic, and Skylar Hendrick. Gonzalez was the number one option last year as a freshman. She has all the tools as an outside hitter with her athleticism and versatility. Last year, she finished with 289 kills and 158 digs. Gonzalez is one people are going to be take notice this year and do not be surprised if enters the PrepDig Rankings for 2023.
Alisa Vukovic is the compliment to Gonzalez in the one-two punch they provide. She like Gonzalez plays on the outside which allows West Windsor-Plainsboro South to never have to truly rotate both of them in. Having two dominant outsides allows them to never fight their rotations or figure out substitutions. Vukovic had a great junior campaign as well with 221 kills, 21 blocks and 218 digs. Vukovic is looked upon as one of the leaders on this squad and in her senior season will want to go out on a high-note.
Lastly, Skylar Hendrick is the final part of the three-headed monster and plays opposite. Hendrick sometimes gets lost behind the one-two combo on the outside. Hendrick is just as good as the other two and had a solid sophomore campaign with 147 kills, 22 blocks and 107 digs. These three compliment each other so well and create a competitive edge towards one another when someone has a better game. This is a nightmare for opposing squads because nobody knows who will be getting the ball. Setter Vaisha Gollarhalli had 522 assists last season and she will be able to pick-and-choose who has the hot hand.
My only concern for the team is relatively small and that is can you live up to the hype. You have everyone back from your starting lineup a year ago and the expectations are high for this squad. I don’t think this will be a problem. You have senior leadership on the court and have all the potential at all six positions.
Once again, this team has everyone coming back. They have all the tools to be able to do something special this season. It will come down to being able to eclipse the obstacle that is Princeton, their rival. They will be the biggest hurdle for West Windsor-Plainsboro South. Don’t be surprised if they knock off Princeton and do something special.
