However, we know one of the reasons why many of you follow high school volleyball is to try and anticipate which prospects have what it takes to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond. So, in this series, we’ll share our best guesses and list the top student-athletes from each of the next three graduating classes in each State district.
We start with the 1A Caribou Trail district and our picks are:
Class of 2021
Elly Collins – Outside Hitter – Chelan
Elly Collins was instrumental to Chelan’s astounding success in 2019 – the Lady Goats secured the State Championship with a 20-0 win record and only four sets dropped along the way. The 5’8” outside hitter was the heart of the team, combining a strong game at the net with solid efficiency at the backcourt. She had the guts to bring the best out of her in the most important moment of the season, a nail-biting five-set match against King’s in the State Championship final in which she registered 19 kills for the Lady Goats. An All-State first-team member in 2019, Collins will continue her volleyball path in the sand as she committed to play beach volleyball for the Grand Canyon University.
Class of 2022
Morgyn Harrison – Libero – Chelan
One of Chelan’s main strengths in 2019 was the team’s rock-solid defense and Morgyn Harrison should be credited for a significant part of that success. The 5’5” libero has all the traits to be an elite player in the position, including her great positioning, impressive ball control, above-average speed and, perhaps most importantly, the ability to take ownership of everything that happens in the team’s backcourt. She delivered in great fashion at last year’s State Championship, registering a whopping 88 digs, including 27 in the final, and received an All-State first-team nomination.
Class of 2023
Olivia Strandberg – Opposite – Chelan
Earning a starting spot in a State Championship-winning team in your freshman season is quite an accomplishment and Olivia Standberg did that and more with Chelan in 2019. The 5’10” opposite is a very solid hitter, combining powerful plays with smart ones, and has put that mix to good use at the State Championship, being the team’s fourth-best in kills with 27. Strandberg also spends some of her time training beach volleyball, which hugely improves her all-around game. She was an All-League second-team member in her first season of high school and is in position to accomplish a lot more in such a solid program.
