Continue ReadingWith events moving, divisions moving, and the shuffling of teams continuing into 2021, St. Louis is going to be a premier place to be the weekend of Presidents Day and we are going to take a look at the setters who will be setting the 16s this weekend. Athletic, savvy, and a true command of the court. Some are pure distributors others might be dual threats where they can score points with their swing as well. Either way, they will be ones whose phones most likely will ring come June 15 (however we might have 2024’s who have to wait another year). Here are some star setters from the 16s group.
How do I decide who to write about?
I watch hundreds of players. I love it. However, there will be players I miss. I start with players that I have seen live or have seen more than once because I feel like I have a feel for who they are as an athlete and what they can do. With this Class of 2023, I am playing catch up from not getting to watch them for most of 2020. The season is young, we will continue watching as many athletes as possible and will continue to write about athletes we see courtside and through all the streaming services!
Finishing up the second round of matches for wave two. More names to have on the radar.

Jordan Heatherly – 1st Alliance 16 Silver
Heavy, left handed swing – Oh, and she can set too. Seeing Heatherly at Central Zone was impressive with a team of all around athletes who play for 1st Alliance. She can dish, but she can also score points. Heatherly is strong and brings a physicality to the net where she can do so many things for her team. A versatile athletes with the skills of Healtherly is tough to come by as she can do some many positive things for her side of the net.

– Milwaukee Sting 16 Gold
Sting 16 Gold is a match up nightmare with all of the different combinations they can run. They can go 6-2, 5-1, beat you with size, beat you with tempo, this team is going to be dangerous when it comes to those day three matchups when they have so much depth.

is the top setter in her class of Wisconsin where she can run the whole show and can be offensive at the net. Rossing provides such a spark and is a backrow setter who can nail all the spots with any tempo. A fun duo to watch who add so much value to this really talented squad.

Avery Van Hook – Iowa Rockets 16R
Cold blooded. I have seen Van Hook on the high school and club courts and she plays with an intensity that is unmatched and is contagious to her Iowa Rockets teammates. This is a really physical and athletic squad where they can do a lot of different combos to score points. She is 5’10, left handed, and her IQ is extremely high where she can find the open attacker or the open spot on the other side of the court. She’s one you draft first to have on your team.
Elise Ward – Adversity G16 Adidas
Adversity continues to get better and is in the conversation with plenty of teams as being the top club throughout the Midwest and even the nation. Ward may not have the size of setters in the front row, but she jump sets, She is a standout on the basketball court as well. A pure gamer where she will find a way for her team to win. She is well trained and also competes for one of the top high school programs in Illinois.

who is the top prospect in the country in the Class of 2023. I was able to see Kline run the show at Triple Crown last year where Legacy would win the title and since then they have won Smokies and Central Zone. They know how to play with a target on their back and yes, they have booming swings, but Kline is the one who puts the pieces in the right spot.

– Union 16-1 UA
Purichia is a fighter. Watching her command the court at Central Zone was a treat when she is the maestro to her orchestra. She is aggressive in being able to make the big set in crunch time, she doesn’t play it safe. Her movement is smooth, her feet are in the right spot, and she creates positive touches and takes what you think would be a free ball into something her attackers can work with. She is another where her fire and intensity is something that can not be found on a stat sheet, but she’s got five stars next to those attributes.
Olivia Klapp – Michio 16 National
Klapp is another who is everywhere on the court. She jump sets every chance she gets, she is a fast tempo player where she speeds the game up for her teammates in a really good way. She could be used as a setter or a DS with an all around skill set. When watching her play, it’s her quickness and overall athletic ability is what you really notice along with a strong all around skill set.

– MiVA 16 Black
This team had a difficult draw at Central Zone being in the same pool as KiVA 16 Red who might be the tallent and most physical team in the 16s Division this season. Despite some of these tough matchups you can see the makings of what this team can be and what setter,

will be over her career. She’s only a Freshman and is 6’1, touching 10 feet and has a lot of upside to her game where she will be able to do some special things. From dishing to the right attacker to being a physical presence at the net, she will be fun to watch the next few years!

– Circle City 16 Purple
Hinshaw is another one who is just super gritty, she’s playing up an age level and she steps on the court with a demeanor where she will find a way to beat you. She’s quick, athletic, and really jump and finds a way to get her hands to the ball. This Circle City team doesn’t have anything flashy about their game, but they just keep it simple, play really good defense, efficient, and will wear teams down. Hinshaw is definitely the straw that stirs the drink and will be one to rise among Indiana’s legacy of top setters they traditionally produce.
