However, we know one of the reasons why many of you follow high school volleyball is to try and anticipate which prospects have what it takes to succeed at the collegiate level and beyond. So, in this series, we’ll share our best guesses and list the top student-athletes from each of the next three graduating classes in each State district.
It’s time we dive into the 2A King County District and these are the players we selected:
Class of 2021
Raelyn Lowery – Setter – Highline
Raelyn Lowery is probably the setter that combines technical skills and physicality the best in the district. Her 5’8”, athletic frame is certainly an asset for Highline, but it’s her great touch on the ball that sets her apart from the competition. In 2019, a season in which she was selected for the All-State team an honorable mention, Lowery registered impressive 191 assists for the Pirates, but went above and beyond her main role with the team to add 62 kills (the second-most in the entire roster), 54 aces, 44 digs and ten blocks.
Class of 2022
Katelyn Bland – Setter/Right Sider – Sammamish
Sammamish also has a fantastic setter of its own in Katelyn Bland. She’s one of the tallest in the position at 5’10” and the Totems made sure to make good use of it, deploying her as a hybrid of setter and right sider. With Bland’s skillset, the experiment couldn’t go wrong and she responded as expected, registering 140 assists and 52 kills to go with 25 blocks and 29 aces. Such a strong production took her to the All-State team as an honorable mention and to the All-League second team.
Class of 2023
Soonafai Tulensru – Outside Hitter – Highline
Not many freshmen had the opportunity to showcase their skills in 2019 and Soonafai Tulensru was among the ones who made the most of their limited time on the court. The 5’6” Highline outside hitter featured in only 26 sets for the Pirates, but showed some promise with 11 kills, ten aces and 34 digs. There’s a lot to see on her game yet and hopefully more playing time next season will allow us to do so.
