Continue ReadingAs we tried to understand how different this high school season would be, I think it would be an understatement to say we have come close to our general idea of the season. Some teams are at the midway point of the season, others may be almost done and some are just beginning. As we’ve been able to dive into the season, players and teams are playing at the highest level. We are going to be looking at the top players statistically. These numbers were provided by NJ.com as of March 30th.
Kills
Adelina Berisha (Scotch Plains-Fanwood)
Not a surprise that our best player for the class of 2021 is leading the way. This all-around outside can do it all. She leads the way significantly with 104 kills and it’s because she has every shot in the book.
Mackenzie Wiggins Mackenzie Wiggins 5'11" | OH Sparta | 2021 State NJ (Sparta)
Wiggins is another top hitter in our class of 2021. She has a lethal swing and has 82 kills. Standing at 5’11”, she has a strong presence at the net but also a robust back row game.
Zuzanna Buchnajzer (Tenafly)
Buchnajzer is the heart and soul of the Tenafly squad. She has raised eyebrows this season. She knows how to hit on angles and is creative. She has 73 kills.
Blocks
Sandra Starcevic (Highland Park)
Starcevic has a clear gap above everyone else in blocks with 41. She has been the focal point for Highland Park. Her length and athleticism is a problem for opposing teams.
Elizabeth Miller (Kent Place)
Miller flies under the radar at Kent Place but she is second in blocks. She has 31 on the season and is able to do so with her length and great anticipation.
Chelsea Tancredi (Ridge)
Tancredi is third on the list with 23 blocks. Her court awareness and anticipation allows her to ensure she is always in position to make a play.
Assists
Kaelie Chung Kaelie Chung 5'4" | DS/L Scotch Plains Fanwood | 2021 State NJ (Scotch Plains-Fanwood)
Chung is the teammate to Berisha at Scotch Plains-Fanwood. She leads the way in assists with 173. Her knowing where everywhere on the court allows her to pick and choose who to send the ball too.
Kaitlyn Alexander (Hillsborough)
Alexander has all the tools as a passer, she has perfect precision and accuracy with her passing. She has 171 assists on the year.
Stephanie Soares (Southern)
Soares has the been the focal point of Southern. She always has her fingerprint on the game. Soares rounds the top 3 with 153 assists.
Aces
Grace Toscano (St. Rose)
Toscano has a wicked serve and defenders have no answer for it. She has been a vital part of ensuring St. Rose is able to keep the ball and stay in matches. She has 45 aces this season.
Sam Araujo (West Milford)
Araujo has been one of the bright spots to keep West Milford afloat. She has 40 aces on the season. The team will need to rely on her and defenders struggle to pick up her ball.
Isabella O’Neill Isabella O’Neill RS Hawthorne | 2021 State NJ (Hawthorne)
O’Neill is the focal point for Hawthorne. The team goes as far she can take them. She has all the serves from jump, float and different spins. She rounds the group with 37 aces.
Digs
Vicky Huang (Morris Tech)
Huang seems like she’s all over the court. Her court position and anticipation allows her to ensure she is able to make a play on the ball. She leads the way with 153 digs.
Zashary Bobadilla (Paterson Charter)
Bobadilla is making her presence known for Paterson Charter. She is getting to balls nobody thought she would get too, then she is making a great pass to top it off. She currently has 132 digs.
Erin Coates Erin Coates OH Cranford | 2022 State NJ (Cranford)
Coates is a solid outside for Cranford, but she is letting the world know she’s a great defender picking right up where she left off last year. She rounds out the group with 129 digs.
