It is, however, a shortened season and in a little over three weeks it will have come to an end already. Knowing that, we certainly don’t want to waste any time and will continue with our weekly articles highlights the players who have been doing a great job in each of the state’s six divisions.
Let’s give a good look at the 2A and 2B divisions now.
2A
Alyssa Kiser – Outside Hitter – Anacortes – 2021
Alyssa Kiser embraced the responsibility of being one of just three seniors on Anacortes’ squad this season and was a central piece in the Seahawks’ campaign. The 5’10” outside hitter led her team in the scoring department with 165 kills and also ranked in the top-three in digs (second, with 97) and passes (third, with 117). Her strongest performance was in a 3-2 win against Nooksack Valley in which she registered 22 kills, 23 passes, 16 digs and two aces.
Avah Griner- Middle-Blocker – Clarkston – 2022
Avah Griner was one of Clarkston’s top performers in the season as she led the team to win seven of their 11 matches. The 5’11” middle-blocker stood out for her game at the net as she was the team’s main blocker with 41 points in 39 sets (averaging 1.1 per set) and ranked third in kills with 72 – she also produced ten aces. She was at her best in a 3-2 victory against North Central when she tallied 12 kills, three blocks and two aces.
Liz Hurn – Defensive Specialist – Woodland – 2022
Liz Hurn made of Woodland one of the strongest defensive teams in the division. The 5’3” defensive specialist got the job done with the Beavers, being the team’s top-ranked defender with 194 digs and serve-receiver with 203 passes. She also produced 27 aces, the second-best mark in the entire roster. Most important than her numbers, however, was the improvement she displayed on the backcourt, going from 3.9 to 4.6 digs per set, and from the service line, jumping from 0.2 to 0.6 aces per set.
2B
Sahara Browing – Outside Hitter – Walla Walla Valley Academy – 2022
Sahara Browing has been a standout for Walla Walla Valley Academy since she joined the program in 2019 and this season wasn’t any different. One of the best-rounded prospects in the entire state, the 5’8” outside hitter delivered on both the offensive and defensive areas of the game, leading the Knights in each of the five statistical categories she possibly could with 263 kills, 56 aces, 17 kills, 131 digs and 86 passes.
Sydnee Balzer – Middle-Blocker – Asotin – 2021
Sydnee Balzer is one of those players who play bigger than their sizes. She’s just 5’4” but plays as a middle-blocker for Asotin and is actually pretty good at it. Balzer is also a track and field student-athlete and she carries some of that background to the volleyball court and it really adds to her blocking ability as she registered 37 blocks in 35 sets to average just over a block per set. She was also strong offensively with 33 kills.
Madison Threadgill – Setter – Upper Columbia Academy – 2024
It’s not usual to see first-year setters make a real impact on their teams but Madison Threadgill was an exception to that. She was an immediate fit at Upper Columbia Academy and did a great job in leading the team to a 6-5 win record in the season. Threadgill was tremendous with her ball distribution, ending the season with 167 assists to an average of six per set. She also contributed in other departments, adding 16 aces and 37 digs.
