The champions have all been deservedly recognized, so now we’ll take some time to highlight the most intriguing prospects that stood out during the season with consistent and efficient play for their high schools.
We start with the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 1A Division, which saw Neches secure its third-straight State Championship title. It’s time we talk blocking and these are a few of the players who dominated the net during the season.
Kacie Kimbrough – Middle-Blocker – Neches – 2021
The All-State Player of the Year according to the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA), Kacie Kimbrough offered her contributions to Neches’ State Championship-winning campaign in a variety of ways. One of the most notable of them was blocking. The 5’9” middle-blocker has impressive leaping ability and great timing at the net, which made of her a factor for the Lady Tigers during the entire season when blocking. She was effective in that skill at the State Championship final too, registering a couple of blocks to add to her total of 63 during the entire season. Kimbrough has committed to the University of Texas at Tyler.
Victoria Carter – Middle-Blocker – D’Hanis – 2021
Victoria Carter was one of the key players in D’Hanis’ campaign that took the team to the State Championship semifinals. The six-foot middle-blocker was a reliable presence at the net for the team with a solid offensive game and, most notably, an impressive ability to stop opponents. Her quick lateral movement and her perfect technical gesture when blocking are Carter’s main assets as a blocker and she put them to good use last season, registering 56 blocks for D’Hanis, 11 of which at the same match, against Hondo. She was part of the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State second team.
Lexi Rogers – Middle-Blocker – Neches – 2021
Blocking was one of the key differences in the State Championship final with Neches securing eight points at the net against Blum’s three. Lexi Rogers played an important role in that as she was responsible for nearly half of that total, with three stuffs registered in the match. The 5’10” middle-blocker is very active and quick at the net, which makes it very difficult for setters to fool her. She’s incredibly fast to put her arms across the net, giving opposing hitters little to no time to make their decisions. Rogers’ solid all-around game took her to the All-Tournament team and to the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State first team.
