Continue ReadingThe most important tournament of the year for the class of 2021 players is just in front of us as the 2021 USAV Girls 18s Junior National Championship is set to happen from April 23-25 in Columbus, Ohio, and as many as 280 teams from the entire country are expected to compete in the five divisions.
Texas will, of course, be represented in the event and we will take the time between now and the start of the tournament in Ohio to present the teams that will carry the Lone Star State flag in Ohio, analyzing their campaigns in the club season so far and highlighting their most important players.
SA Juniors 18 Adidas is one of the teams representing the Lone Star State in the 18 Open Division and here’s what you need to know about them:
Part of the recently-created San Antonio Juniors Volleyball Club, the team has started on the right foot under the guidance of coach Jennifer Montoya. SA Juniors 18 Adidas has a 33-10 win record so far in the season and topped the standings in half of the six tournaments they played at (the FAST Warm Up, the Countdown City Classic and the Tour of Texas Qualifier) while finishing second and third other two.
Here are their key players:
Elise McGhee Elise McGhee 6'3" | MB Clark | 2021 State TX – Outside Hitter/Middle-Blocker – HS: Clark – 2021
Elise McGhee Elise McGhee 6'3" | MB Clark | 2021 State TX can double up as an outside hitter and middle-blocker for SA Juniors 18 Adidas but she’s typically used at the pin. Standing at 6’4”, she’s a force to reckon at the net and can score regardless of the set or the block standing on her way. She easily hits over the top of blockers and is also smart enough to use her great technique when that’s the best option. It’s virtually impossible to match her reach and McGhee is also very consistent and reliable, which makes of her an ideal scoring option. She ranks 16th on our 2021 Pred Dig State Rankings and will play for Baylor at the collegiate level.
Alyssa Ortega Alyssa Ortega 5'5" | DS/L Churchill | 2021 State TX – Libero – HS: Churchill – 2021
Alyssa Ortega Alyssa Ortega 5'5" | DS/L Churchill | 2021 State TX is very dynamic and technically gifted, a combination that seems to work well for elite liberos like her. The 5’5” defensive standout is as solid as it gets on the backcourt and takes control of the team’s defensive efforts seamlessly. Ortega is very quick and has tremendous ball control, skills that paired with her great reading make of her one of the best liberos in the state. She is the 71st-best prospect in Texas according to our 2021 Prep Dig State Rankings and has committed to Stephen F. Austin.
Did you think líberos couldn’t score? @SAJuniorsVB ‘s Alyssa Ortega Alyssa Ortega 5'5" | DS/L Churchill | 2021 State TX certainly disagrees. @PrepDigTX pic.twitter.com/UOL4LnEM9S

Faye Wilbricht Faye Wilbricht 5'10" | OH Holy Cross | 2021 State TX – Outside Hitter – HS: Holy Cross – 2021
Faye Wilbricht Faye Wilbricht 5'10" | OH Holy Cross | 2021 State TX ‘s athleticism is what makes of her a special player. A 5’10” outside hitter, she can get really high at the net because of her jumping skills and that makes things really difficult for the players trying to stop her at the net. Willbricht was a gymnast for nearly a decade and that experience has given her outstanding body control, a skill she uses to tool blocks when needed. She ranks 11th on our 2021 Prep Dig State Rankings and will remain in the state during her collegiate career as she committed to Texas A&M.
