Continue ReadingClub volleyball season is at full pace and several tournaments were held in Texas this past weekend. Among them was the Skyline Classic #10, which reunited some 17s teams of the state at the Houston Skyline facilities on Saturday.
It was a small field tournament with only 18 teams entered and events like this present a rare opportunity for volleyball fans to spot some hidden gems in the early stages of their careers. Prep Dig was there and will provide our traditional tournament reports during the week.
Today we’ll list the middle blockers who made the best impressions during the event.
Jordan Thomas – HVA Comets 17 Red – HS: Kinkaid – 2022
It was impossible to not perceive and respect Jordan Thomas’ presence at the net. The 6’2” middle-blocker towered everyone else in the tournament on Saturday and used her tremendous size to push HVA Comets 17 Red to a very positive 3-1 campaign. Her long arms were difficult to hit around for opponents and she showed good penetration with her hands, taking up a lot of space from hitters. Her offensive game is still a work in progress, but her tremendous reach gave her a comfortable advantage.
Evie Alexander – Xcel Volleyball 172 – 2023
For those looking from the outside, it would be hard to notice Evie Alexander was actually playing against opponents who were one year older than her. The 5’10” Xcel Volleyball 172 middle-blocker showcased a very interesting game, especially on offense, as she was frequently set by her teammates and had a very high efficiency rate with powerful hits going different directions. She also showed a very complete game as Alexander proved to be a very good server and defender as well.
Payton Reeves – TXEVO 17 – HS: Shepherd – 2023
There’s tremendous upside on Payton Reeves’ game. The six-foot TXEVO 17 middle-blocker still has a long way to go in terms of refining her game but not many players of her age have the physical tool she does. Reeves is tall but very athletic and light, which helps a ton with her mobility at the net. She’s also developing a good reading of the game and was able to anticipate some plays at the net. Besides developing her technical skills, work to make her more explosive would also be extremely beneficial and would take her game to another level.
