Continue ReadingClub volleyball season is at full pace and several tournaments were held in Texas this past weekend. Among them was the Skyline Classic #10, which reunited some 17s teams of the state at the Houston Skyline facilities on Saturday.
It was a small field tournament with only 18 teams entered and events like this present a rare opportunity for volleyball fans to spot some hidden gems in the early stages of their careers. Prep Dig was there and will provide our traditional tournament reports during the week.
We start with the setters that stood out in the Skyline Classic #10.
Caroline Howell – HJV 17 Premier – HS: Memorial – 2022
A good team typically starts with a good setter and HJV 17 Premier was no exception as the team that cruised to win the tournament with four wins in as many matches and no sets dropped had one of the best in the business in Caroline Howell. The 5’10”, left-handed setter had a great group of hitters to work with and she made the most of it, adjusting her sets to each player’s needs and alternating quick sets with higher ones and making it challenging for opponents to establish a pattern on the team’s offense. She’s also a terrific server and had a quite long serving run in the team’s opening match against Catalyst 17 White.
Erin Mosel – KW 17 Revolution Elite – HS: Kingwood – 2023
Erin Mosel showed a very complete game and each of her skills helped KW 17 Revolution Elite to finish third in the bracket with a single loss in four matches. Mosel proved to be a very versatile player as she ran a 6-2 system and was an efficient hitter while at the net, but her setting game was what really stood out due to her great ball distribution and nice touch. She was also probably the only player in the entire tournament to take her chances on a topspin jump serve and it proved to be a very good one as it was the difference for KW 17 Revolution Elite in a very tough pool match against TEXSTAR 17.
Kadence Looper – TEXSTAR 17 – HS: Lexington – 2022
Kadence Looper is another versatile prospect who can do a lot more than setting. After several years playing as an outside hitter for her high school and club teams, she successfully transitioned to the setting role and has shown she has all the tools to thrive there as well. Looper plays higher than her 5’7” size and has great hands and a smart ball distribution which seems to be guided by her great feeling of the game. She also seems to still have some of the scoring fire that she used to as an outside hitter inside herself as she frequently uses her setter dumps to score.
Grace Lee – Cypress Wolf Pack 171 Black – 2022
Grace Lee’s outstanding setting skills were one of the reasons why Cypress Wolf Pack 17 Black managed to win half of their four matches in the tournament. Lee did her best to run a fast offense and give her hitters the best chance to score in every play and she did a great job in keeping all of them involved during matches. Another very important skill she displayed was the ability to turn bad passes in hittable balls.
