Marina Gronkiewicz Marina Gronkiewicz 5'10" | S Munster | 2022 State IN , 5-10, 1st Alliance, Munster
The only setter on this list who crosses a state line to play club, Marina has excellent foot speed, high hands, runs a quicker-than-average offense, and defends at an above-average level for this class in the state of Indiana. I like her no-nonsense approach to setting; she’s in charge, she gets the second ball, and is rarely asking for help. Probably the best trained setter among these five, Marina can run a 5-1 for both small and large schools at the next level.
Kylie VanHoy Kylie VanHoy 5'10" | S Loogootee | 2022 State IN , 5-10, Evansville United, Loogootee
From one end of the state to the other, Kylie already has 1st team All-State attached to her name, along with a state championship appearance. She can definitely run a 5-1, but has routinely been asked by her respective coaches to attack as a right side or even a middle in a modified 6-2. Case in point; she led the Lions in kills and blocks and was second in assists last fall.
Kelsey Smith Kelsey Smith 6'0" | S Hamilton Heights | 2022 State IN , 6-0, Grand Park, Hamilton Heights
Another hybrid, but one that jumps higher. Kelsey plays for a regional version of the Academy series of clubs, and probably belongs with a team that plays a tougher schedule. Miss Smith’s attack touch is close to ten feet, can run a 5-1 with ease, and can get the tight passes that no one else on this list can get. The sheer athleticism of this kid makes up for the lack of high-level training, and she’s only going to get better.
Payton Rolfsen Payton Rolfsen 5'11" | S Leo | 2022 State IN , 5-11, Empowered, Leo
On the other end of the spectrum in terms of level of training is Payton, who has been playing long enough to have acquired that volleyball acuity so desperately needed at the setting position. Her length and smarts are more than enough to run a 5-1, and has the best potential on this list to do so for a larger school at the next level. Miss Rolfsen is also listed as a right side, but projects to run a fast offense at the next level. Her accuracy of sets is what stands out to me.
Reagan Nuss Reagan Nuss 5'6" | S Brownstown Central | 2022 State IN , 5-6, Cougar, Brownstown Central
The only player on this list with (1) a state championship trophy and (2) first-team All-State accolades plays for a little regional club out of Seymour, Indiana, about halfway between Indianapolis and Louisville. Do not let her size fool you; she’s been running a 5-1 since, well, FOREVER, and is more than capable of doing so at the next level. She plays better defense that most, and is accurate with her offense, both in system and out of system. This is another kid that I’d like to see play against tougher competition, but with her senior season on the horizon, she’ll have all that she can handle this coming fall.
