Not in my House!  In basketball there is the defensive Center. The stopper.  The one who can be relied on if an opponent breaks their defender down and drives to the hole.  Volleyball also has their stopper.  Their first line of defense is the Middle Blocker.  The name of their position says it all.  But in all actuality, their position is so much more than that in this day and age of the sport of volleyball. 

Middles (what us in the biz call them for short) now have to be extremely athletic, agile, and high fliers. Outside pin hitters get most of the glory, but it’s all set up with a solid middle attack.  In advanced offenses, they are running back of the team.  Setting the middles early and often is the strategy of any high power offense.  Once they are established, the defense has to respect them.  This will open up the flood gates for the Outsides to swing through splits in the block or one on one situations.  It’s like a run first offense in football and then running a play action pass that gets a huge first down or scores a touchdown.  Its a game of chess not
