Continue ReadingWashington volleyball capped off their club season last week, when they competed at the 2021 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship in Las Vegas.
The tournament marked the end of the club season and was attended by eight teams from the Evergreen state in the 16s age-group.
These teams competed across four different divisions and here’s a quick breakdown of their performances in Nevada.
16 American division
Seattle Jrs 16 (61st – 2 wins, 8 losses)
The team from the Seattle area was punished by a rough start and a couple of late wins after eight losses wasn’t enough to rank it any higher than 61st in the 64-team American division. Seattle Jrs 16 couldn’t get it going and didn’t win their first set until their seventh match. Even though the team ended up losing to Lakeside Piranhas, that match set the floor to victories against Niagara Frontier 16 Red and Renaissance 16 Red that ended the team’s participation in the tournament.
16 National division
DaKine Warriors 16 Surf (13th – 4 wins, 5 losses)
The team from the Tacoma area got the best finish among the Washington teams that competed in Las Vegas, ranking 13th in the National division with four wins and five losses. DaKine Warriors 16 Surf was rewarded for a strong start, which saw them winning three of their pool play matches without dropping sets. The started Round 2 well too, beading Northern Lights 16-2, but then lost three in a row to end its campaign, including a final one to MAVS 816 16-1 in the Silver Bracket.
16 Patriot division
PSVBA 16 Dan (37th – 8 wins, 4 losses)
The team from the traditional club from Tacoma was the best among the five Washingtonians that competed in the Patriot division, finishing 37th with a solid 8-4 win record. PSVBA 16 Dan could have earned a better finish if it had done better on pool play, in which they won one out of three matches, against Forza 16 National. The team had a solid run after that, however, winning seven of their final nine matches, six of which in straight sets, including the last one, against 1W Bay 16 Mizuno.
SIVBC 16 Tornado (41st – 5 wins, 6 losses)
The squad from Bellevue recovered from a rough start to finish 41st in the division with five wins and six losses. SIVBC 16 Tornado won a single set in its first three matches and created a tough path forward. Back-to-back victories against Rage 16 June and Saddleback 16-Mike made things better but then three consecutive setbacks followed. The team ended the tournament on a high, though, prevailing over ECVBA 16 Nick, LAVA North 16 Adidas and Attack 16 Smack.
PSVBA 16 Steve (51st – 3 wins, 7 losses)
The second team from the Puget Sound Volleyball Academy had a rougher path than the other one, finishing 51st with a 3-7 win record. PSVBA 16 Steve made things difficult by losing all three pool play matches. A victory over City Volleyball 16 Ryan was followed by a couple other upsets. The team won two out of three, against Rage 16 June and Flve:1 16-Blue, but ended its participation with another defeat, this one to Ultimate Asics G16 Gold.
NPJ Seattle 16 Elite (54th – 3 wins, 7 losses)
The team from Seattle had a similar campaign, with three wins and seven losses, but ended up ranking three positions lower at 54th. All of NPJ Seattle 16 Elite’s victories were earned in the final half of the team’s campaign. After five consecutive losses, the team upset Epic 16-Darbra to claim its first win on Round 2. The other victories were over fellow Washingtonians Kraken VC – 16 Reef and Forza1 16 National.
Kraken VC 16 – Reef (59th – 1 win, 8 losses)
Kraken VC -16 Reef was Washington’s less successful team in the division, having won just one of their nine matches to finish 59th. The team lost to two other squads from the Evergreen State, PSVBA 16 Dan and NPJ Seattle 16 Elite, and claimed its first triumph against SWVBC G16 Blue, in Round 3.
16 USA division
NPJ Seattle 16 National (35th – 1 win, 8 losses)
The team from Seattle was the state’s only representative the USA division and finished near the bottom at 35th, with one victory and eight setbacks. The team’s only win, which happened in their final pool play match against HJV 16 Premier, was sandwiched between four losses before and after it, the last of which against Texas Fury 16 Legacy.
