It will be exciting to see some well-known names establishing themselves even more in the Lone Star state volleyball scene and some new faces breaking through and quickly emerging to earn the spaces.
Between now and the start of the high school season, at the beginning of August, we’ll highlight some players we believe are worth your attention when teams get back on the gym. The University Interscholastic League (UIL) 2A Division remains out topic and today we’ll give a good look on some of its best liberos.
Sydney Chamberlain – HS: Union Grove – 2022
Sydney Chamberlain was one of the most influential players in Union Grove’s entire roster this past season and was one of just four players in the team to be part of the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State team as an honorable mention. The libero, who also plays softball for her high school, made the most of her possibilities and was instrumental to the Lady Lions’ campaign leading the team in passes (515) and digs (323) and ranking second in aces (87). She also made it to All East Texas team as a second-team selection.
Addison Goldenberg – HS: Crawford – Club: Waco Juniors – 2023
Addison Goldenberg was at her best when Crawford most needed her, at last year’s State Championship final, when she left the court with 35 digs to her name. The Lady Pirates didn’t win that match but that didn’t put even a wrinkle on the libero’s tremendous season. The 5’5” Goldenberg masterfully led Crawford’s backcourt efforts delivering 513 digs and 500 passes over the course of the season.
Maddison Ashton – HS: Collinsville – 2022
Collinsville’s defensive system was never a problem for the Lady Pirates last season as they could rely on Maddison Ashton’s efficiency to coordinate their work at the backcourt. The libero’s ability to anticipate opponents’ moves and control the ball proved crucial to the team’s success over the season as some of the team’s most remarkable results were backed by her strong performances, most notably a 3-2 win over Dodd City in which she dug 34 balls. Ashton, who would a few weeks later go further to register 48 digs against Tom Bean, ended the season with 484 digs and 393 passes to her name.
