It will be exciting to see some well-known names establishing themselves even more in the Lone Star state volleyball scene and some new faces breaking through and quickly emerging to earn the spaces.
Between now and the start of the high school season, at the beginning of August, we’ll highlight some players we believe are worth your attention when teams get back on the gym. These are some of the outside hitters in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 2A Division you don’t want to miss.
Jenna McDougald – Iola – 2022
Jenna McDougald was a key piece of Iola’s team that won last year’s State Championship. The 5’9” outside hitter has a very well-rounded game and complemented Player of the Year Cadence Hoyle really well but she came up big in the State Championship final against Crawford scoring 19 points. Besides of her great technique, McDougald also impresses for her never-ending energy and her willingness to do whatever it takes to help her team winning. She was rewarded for her great performance with her inclusion in both the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State team and the All-Tournament team.
Katie Warden – HS: Crawford – Club: Waco Juniors – 2022
Katie Warden is one of the most powerful hitters in the entire division and her performance in 2020, when she took Crawford to the State Championship final, reflects that. The 5’9” outside hitter is surprisingly physical and she used these tools to end the season with 511 kills to her name. Warden was excellent in several other areas of the game too, tallying 317 digs, 435 passes and 51 aces for the Lady Pirates. Such a complete performance took her to both the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State team and the All-Tournament team.
Jordan Sommer – Schulenburg – 2022
Jordan Sommer was an important name in a solid Schulenburg team during the 2020 season. The 5’7” outside hitter played bigger than her size to help the Lady Shorthorns in multiple areas of the game. Sommer was one of the team’s primary offensive options, ranking second in kills with 276, but also produced at the backcourt, with 297 digs and 275 passes, and from the service line, with 42 aces. She made it to the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State second team.
