It will be exciting to see some well-known names establishing themselves even more in the Lone Star state volleyball scene and some new faces breaking through and quickly emerging to earn the spaces.
Between now and the start of the high school season, at the beginning of August, we’ll highlight some players we believe are worth your attention when teams get back on the gym. This is our first article addressing the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 2A Division and we’ll start with the setters.
Lexi Moody – Crawford – 2022
Lexi Moody is already a well-known name when it comes to high school setters in the state of Texas as she’s been doing history at Crawford over the last few years. The 5’8” prospect had some of the greatest hands in the entire state, having registered north on 1,000 assists in each of her three season and broken the school’s single-season assists record in 2019 with impressive 1,641. Moody does a lot more than setting, though, as her high school totals also show 800 digs, 328 kills and 225 aces. A state champion in 2019, she was part of the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State team last year and the All-Tournament team.
Ava Pointer – Iola – 2022
Those who watched the division’s last year’s State Championship final were gifted with an impressive battle between two of the best setters in the entire state. And Iola’s Ava Pointer arguably came out on top of it, as she not only led the Lady Bulldogs to the title but also won her personal duel with Lexi Moody, registering 45 assists to her opponents’ 36. That was the perfect end for a sensational season of the 5’6” Pointer, who made it the All-Tournament team and the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State second team.
Calle Minter – Big Sandy – 2022
Calle Minter wasn’t involved in last year’s State Championship final but that doesn’t erase the tremendous season she had with Big Sandy. The 5’4” setter made the most of her skills to help the Wildcats and produced at a very high rate, ending the team’s campaign with 619 assists and 273 digs – she’s put on a clinic in a 3-2 victory over Union Grove in which she registered 47 assists and 63 digs. Her strong numbers and even better performances took her to the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State team as an honorable mention.
