It will be exciting to see some well-known names establishing themselves even more in the Lone Star state volleyball scene and some new faces breaking through and quickly emerging to earn the spaces.
Between now and the start of the high school season, at the beginning of August, we’ll highlight some players we believe are worth your attention when teams get back on the gym. It’s time we honor the defensive wizards of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 4A Division – the top liberos.
Camdyn Hinton – HS: Glen Rose – Club: Texas Advantage – 2022
Camdym Hinton is arguably the best libero in the entire division and was awarded as so last season when she made it to the Texas Sports Writers Association (TSWA) All-State team besides the All-District Team. A brilliant defender, Hinton has built her impressive defensive game on her ability to run opposing hitters and move quickly at the backcourt. She’s very technical too and has broken records at her high school team Glen Rose year after year.
Alyssa Edwards – HS: Needville – 2022
Alyssa Edwards is a defensive stud for her high school team Needville and has had a tremendous season in 2020, when she registered jaw-dropping 665 digs, more than doubling her dig per set average from the previous year from 2.9 to 6.5. She was also a big part of the Bluejays’ serve-receiving system with 499 passes. One of the best things about the 5’5” Edwards is that she raises to the occasion and produces fantastic performances against stronger opponents – she had 35 digs, her second-best mark in the season, in the team’s only defeat, to Wiberley.
Chelsea George Chelsea George 5'8" | DS/L Melissa | 2022 State TX – HS: Melissa – Club: Madfrog – 2022
Chelsea George Chelsea George 5'8" | DS/L Melissa | 2022 State TX is another exceptional defender who had a monster 2020 season. The 5’8” libero was lights out for her high school team Melissa, generating 600 digs and 711 passes for the Cardinals – she also produced 66 aces. The left-handed George is extremely technical and has been refining her game in one of the strongest clubs in the entire state, Madfrog, with both volleyball and beach volleyball practices. She’s particularly good in digging hard hits due to her tremendous ball control. She ranks 94th on our 2022 Prep Dig State Rankings.
