Continue ReadingThis week is the week that will bring so much joy to many volleyball coaches and players across the great State of Texas. Last year the preseason was cut short due to “It That Shall Not Be Named”. This year we are able to have a full tryout and pre/regular volleyball school season. We are looking forward to seeing everyone back in action on the court. We will be highlighting a few teams that have a chance to do something very special this year if it all works out. Today we bring our attention to Northwest Eaton HS.
The Eaton Eagles are coming off of a wonderful season in which they reached their first ever Regional Final. They went 18-3 overall last year and took first place in their district by going 10-2. They are returning four of their starters from last year’s dominant team and are primed for another run at the title in 6A. We have written about some of these players before and here is a little from our recent articles about them if you need to remember who they are:
Emily Simmons Emily Simmons 5'10" | OH Eaton | 2023 State #169 Nation TX [2023] 5-10 Outside (HS: Eaton/Club: Texas Advantage /Verbal: Uncommitted)
Emily is currently ranked as the 10th best overall prospect and the 5th best outside in the 2023 class according to our Prep Dig State Rankings. We profiled her back in march of 2020 and here is a little of what was written, “Watching this youngster play is a real joy. The footwork she shows transitioning to her touch point to attack is pure textbook. She loves to get wide and this helps her get some momentum for her hitting approach. Her coaches at TAV have really taught her a lot and it shows. She definitely goes up to swing with a planned attack. She reads the defense well with her eyes and scores at a high clip. As a coach at heart, I would love to show my players clips of her footwork when teaching how to play the position.” She has been on a tear as she did it all for her Eaton varsity squad. She sets and hits for them. She was a huge reason for their 18-3 overall record along with a 10-2 district record. This past year she tallied 87 kills and hit a very good .210 hitting percentage. She also had 193 digs and 269 assists. She played amazing in Vegas and deserves the recognition of being on the All-Tournament Team. We are excited to have her in our State Rankings and cannot wait to cover her for the upcoming school season. Please help us congratulate her on the achievement.
Lindsey Harris [2022] 6-3 Middle (HS: Eaton/Club: Texas Advantage /Verbal: Elon)
Lindsey is currently unranked in the 2022 Class but she has been on our watch list and could break into the rankings next week when we update them. She is a fantastic middle for Eaton High School and also for the nationally recognized Texas Advantage Volleyball. We are very pleased to announce that she recently chose to verbally commit to Elon University. Elon will love the net presence that Miss Harris brings to the table. She has been a stud for V.R. Eaton as she has tallied 151 blocks,, 372 kills, a hitting percentage of .313, and also 65 digs in only two years on varsity. She has the ability to play both middle and on the right side pin. She is a very technically sound and fast middle who excels on the blocking side. Her press on the net is something that cannot be ignored from her opponents. Everything about her play will translate very well to the next level and we think she has tons of potential to get even better. I love how well she reads the offense of her opponent to set up defensively. It always seems as if she is one step ahead of the opposing setter. Please congratulate her on her great accomplishment of playing at the next level. We look forward to covering her senior season this year.
Paige Mooney [2022] 5-9 Outside (HS: Eaton/Club: Texas Image/ Verbal: Texas Tech)
Paige is currently unranked in the 2022 class according to our State Rankings but that could change as we update the rankings next week. She is a solid six-rotation pin hitter who also plays club at Texas Image out of the North Texas Region. Last year Paige contributed all over the court for the Eagles as she tallied 182 kills on a .191 hitting percentage. She also had 13 blocks, 291 digs, and added 13 aces to help their run through the 2020-2021 season. The Texas Tech commit is smooth on the court and can do it all on the indoor court and also in the sand. She is one of the few vballers who can easily transition from one sport to the other and not skip a beat. This shows her all around volleyball skill-set. Although not prototypical outside hitter height, she can still time extremely well and hit with power to score. Her ball control in every aspect of the game is why she is able to help Eaton dominate. We are looking forward to covering her during her senior season.
Callie Humphrey [2022] 5-5 Libero (HS: Eaton/Club: Texas Pistols/ Verbal: University of Louisiana at Monroe {Beach})
Miss Humphrey is an unranked prospect in the 2022 class. Callie is one of the recent indoor players to make the transition to the outdoor circuit. She has committed to playing beach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. It takes a special player to be able to play both indoor and beach. Callie fell in love with sand vb ever since she was 12 years old and finished 3rd at AAU Nationals in Florida. She is a natural leader on any team she plays on and shows a lot of fire when she plays. It is extremely contagious to everyone watching and playing with her. In two years at Eaton, she has amassed 211 assists, 49 aces, and 306 digs. We fully expect her to be a major contributor to the Eagles run at a title this season. We will be watching very closely.
We like them because they are led by upperclassmen who have been there before. Every talking head in sports will put leadership and experience at the top of the list when it comes to the intangibles needed to take the crown. The Eagles definitely have a chance to win it all. They are ready and we will see how it all plays out, but if I was a betting man, I would say its safe to put them back in the state playoffs as they should dominate their district again.
