Continue ReadingThis year we were able to have a full tryout and pre/regular volleyball school season. The season is now in full swing and we couldn’t be more proud to see all of the action. We will be highlighting a few teams that have a chance to do something very special this year if it all works out. Today we bring our attention to Bishop Kelley Comets volleyball team.
The Bishop Kelley Comets are coming off of a wonderful season last year as they won the 6A State Title. They went 31-3 overall last year and were picked to be pretty special again this year by local experts. Head Coach Jerri Berna has some special players returning from last year’s dominant team and are primed for another run at the title in 6A. We have written about some of these players before and here is a little from our recent articles about them if you need to remember who they are:
Eleanor Percy Eleanor Percy 5'10" | MB Bishop Kelley | 2022 State OK [2022] 5-10 Middle (HS: Bishop Kelley/Club: UPVBC/ Verbal: Uncommitted)
Miss Percy is ranked as the 47th best overall prospect in the 2022 class. Eleanor is one of the senior leaders on the team and brings a wealth of experience to them. She has 37 kills on a very impressive .263 hitting percentage. With only 11 errors she leads the team in efficiency. This kind of middle play will keep their opponents from camping out on the outsides. Her defense is definitely helping them as she is currently second in blocks. This will come in handy as they battle against the state’s best in the playoffs. She plays club for a very special Ultimate Performance Volleyball that has taken the Oklahoma Region by storm the last few years. We just watched her in action during the Girls Junior National Championships in Vegas this past summer and she played very well. We are looking forward to covering the rest of her senior season. Stay tuned for more on Miss Percy.
Megan Roy Megan Roy 5'10" | MB Bishop Kelley | 2023 State OK [2023] 5-10 Middle (HS: Bishop Kelley/Club: Oklahoma Peak Performance/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Megan is currently ranked as our 7th best overall prospect and the 2ndbest middle in the 2023 class according to our Prep Dig State Rankings. She is a beast middle hitter for Bishop Kelley High School and one of the best club programs in the state in Oklahoma Peak Performance. Miss Roy helped Bishop Kelley go 34-4 overall last season. In her first year on varsity she was able to tally 95 kills on a .288 hitting percentage. She also had 37 blocks and 25 aces as a sophomore. We think she will have a stellar junior season this year now that she has a taste of what it feels like. This young lady has some great bounce to her and gets off of the ground really fast. She has great fast twitch reflexes and is able to stop on a dime in defensive transition to get to her setter to run quick attacks. We are excited to watch her growth in the sport and follow her career. Please congratulate her on being recognized as one of the state’s best volleyball players.
Jessica Shildt Jessica Shildt 5'3" | DS/L Bishop Kelley | 2023 State OK [2023] 5-2 Libero (HS: Bishop Kelley/Club: Club ONE/Verbal: Uncommitted)
Jessica is currently ranked as our 23rd best overall prospect in the 2023 class according to our Prep Dig State Rankings. She plays for Bishop Kelley High School and also club volleyball for the Club ONE program. Miss Shildt shows great range as she routinely is able to keep a ball in play that is hit well beyond her reach. She is able to push off her outside foot and extend her entire body out to dig the seam attack. Being a smaller player, she does not play like it as she has such a great soft touch on hard driven balls from her opponents. She has been extremely solid for Bishop Kelley in the back row as she has tallied 598 digs, 839 service receptions, and 37 aces in a year and a half on varsity. We are proud to have her in the Rankings and look forward to covering her. Please help us congratulate her on being one of the top players in the State of Oklahoma.
Brooke Goen [2023] 5-8 Outside (HS: Bishop Kelley/ Verbal: Uncommitted)
Brooke is currently an unranked prospect in the 2023 class but that will change once we update the rankings in a few months. Brooke already has 66 kills on this young season and will be a solid contributor for the Comets to continue their dominance. She has a great vertical and a very heavy arm on the left side pin although some might call her undersized. She definitely doesn’t play like it and can score in a variety of ways. I love how she is able to stop, turn, and transition far outside to properly utilize her momentum in order to bang on the left side for her squad. When the opposing team gives her a seam…watch out as Brooke will put the ball beneath the wood. Miss Goen gets off of the ground so quickly from a strong lower body and we think she can for sure help a college team in some form in two years. Stay tuned for more from Brooke.
Curry Kendall Curry Kendall 6'1" | OH Bishop Kelley | 2024 State OK [2024] 6-1 Outside (HS: Bishop Kelley/Club: Oklahoma Peak Performance/ Verbal: Uncommitted)
Curry is an unranked prospect in the 2024 class but that is only because we are about to release them in a few weeks and don’t want to spoil the unveiling. Miss Kendall is a super sophomore that will keep the Comets in the title conversation over the next few years. There is nothing this young lady can’t do on a volleyball court. Her 179 kills are leading the team and she is second in digs at 112. Before her time is up at Bishop Kelley, she has a chance to be one of their all-time greats. She is special and the entire nation better write this name down as she has double digit kills in every match so far this year. The arm on this kid is something to be in awe of. We are going to love covering her for the next three years.
We like them because they are led by a ton of players who have been there before. Every talking head in sports will put leadership and experience at the top of the list when it comes to the intangibles needed to take the crown. The OSSAA has them ranked number one in 6A after three weeks of action as they are currently 10-2 overall. They have once again proved themselves and we are excited to see if they can run the table again to go back to back. The Comets definitely have a chance to win it all. It will take each and every one of them to do it together. They are ready and we will see how it all plays out, but if I was a betting man, I would say its safe to put them back in the state playoffs as they should dominate their conference schedule.
